An elegant 19th century colonial-style country house with stunning hotel rooms, restaurant, lounge and terrace areas, Wingrove House is set in the beautiful and historic East Sussex village of Alfriston. Offering modern British cuisine, the restaurant has a bright and spacious feel with beautiful views over to the village church on the Tye.

Wingrove House serves traditional Sunday lunches and stunningly presented dinners created by a team led by the highly experienced Executive Chef Mathew Comben. We have dined at the Wingrove on many occasions and have always been very pleased however the lunch we had recently was not up to the usual standard and was disappointing. The quality of the food was not great and the larger bites menu was limited.
Staff however were very friendly and accommodating.

Lovely setting for a restaurant, but we both expected more from the food. The pork rillet was nice but my salmon and thai salad was uninspired. Goat cheese chicken with risotto was edible and my steak was up to reasonable pub standard. Deserts were pleasant enough but again 'pub grub' style. We were hoping for fine dining and the food did not make it. Could be so much better with some real care and dedication.

The service has improved no end, back to how it used to be. The food was ok, the steak was disappointing, a cheaper cut, much preferred the sirloin. Overall though we'd totally come back, which we wouldn't have said a year ago.. definitely more expensive and food not as good as rathfinney, but we had a good night and the staff were much more attentive than our last visits.

Food was very good. We only had 2 courses as the bread and oil beforehand was enough whilst we waited for the main course.
We had fish and pork which was excellent. Wine was rather plonked ready opened in a cooler on the table. The wine had no cork so may be it does not need to be looked at first. We have stayed at this hotel many times under the previous management. We came here specially for 80th b/day dinner last August - 6 of us. We stayed at another hotel with a pool - excellent for the grandchild particularly and us of course. We come for Glyndebourne and the 7 sisters walking and the pretty Alfriston village. We love it all. We still like your hotel very much.

My roast meat was adequate, if a little pricey for what it was. My partner chose the vegetarian dishes: a leek and sweet potato soup, and 'Thai' caulifower curry. The leeks were undectectable and the soup essentially liquidised sweet potato, palatable but bland. The curry was insipid, with no 'spring vegetables' and barely any spices, and for what it was, exorbitant. The wine we requested was unavailable. When my partner was asked about her food she expressed her disappointment and the restaurant manager (?) offered us a 10% discount and to drop the service charge. It took us a few moments to realise that the manager was in effect penalising her blameless junior staff, about whom we had no complaint, for the failings of the kitchen. Lazy, unimaginative cooking is one thing, but this was not even common decency. We paid the discounted bill and left a tip, which we can only hope reached the servers.
