Taking its name from a poem by Lewis Carroll, The Walrus and The Carpenter is located close to the Monument commemorating the Great Fire of London. A traditional London pub, it boasts a large U-shaped bar, outdoor seating for al fresco summer dining, and serves a broad menu of well-loved British dishes.

Since Nicholson’s pubs were first established in 1873, these traditional British inns have become synonymous with warm hospitality, hearty pub food and a speciality range of ales. As well as always featuring British pub classics like beer-battered fish & chips and gammon & eggs, the Walrus & Carpenter menu is complemented by a rotating selection of pie, sausage & chop and fish specials for each season.

The Walrus & Carpenter bar is always stocked with exquisite gins, warming whiskies and fine wines to pair with favourite meals, and there’s always a superb range of seasonal and regional real ales on offer. A constant at the bar is the St Austell-brewed Nicholson’s Pale Ale, made with Cornish Maris Otter malts, and a hand-picked blend of English hops.

The Walrus and The Carpenter in Monument is just a 2-minute walk from Monument Tube Station.

The service was Ok, but when we went at 12.30 lunchtime there was hardly any choice if food, they did not have any of the starters we wanted, and had run out of various mains, plus they bought the wrong wine! When the good came it was OK but very sparse on chips!!

Based upon my experience of very enjoyable lunches (as a member of a small group) in the restaurant twice during the past year, I booked a table for three for lunch on Tues 9th August. The menu offers a wide choice of starters, main dishes and desserts, not to mention the sharing platters and the speciality dishes, all of which are very well prepared and presented. On this occasion we all chose the special burger recommendation and were very pleased with this choice. There is a good choice of beers, wines and other drinks available. Being on the first floor, the dining room, which has its own bar and a large number of tables, has many large windows and is thus light and airy. The table at the far end overlooks the main road and also has a direct view of The Monument. The service is good, with cheerful and attentive waitresses/servers. This restaurant is popular and caters for pre-booked business lunches, as well as for the casual visitors/tourists. It has a good ambiance. On the ground floor is the pub, which is also very popular and crowded, for informal/casual drinks and meals. Before I retired I used to frequent the bar as a City businessman with colleagues at lunchtime or in the evening after work. By the way, it is in a prime position for The London Marathon, as it is alongside Lower Thames Street, part of the route. In short, I recommend The Walrus & the Carpenter.
