The only Tudor castle in England to be run as a hotel, Thornbury Castle is an historic building which once played host to Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Classic heritage cuisine is served in the hexagonal-panelled main dining room, with its heavy oil paintings and roaring fires.

Modern internationally-inspired dishes are combined with traditional favourites, created using only the finest and freshest ingredients, sourced from the castle’s own gardens, local markets and nearby suppliers. Highlights on the Thornbury Castle menu include poached & grilled veal rump with smoked garlic, gnocchi, olives, broad beans & foie gras, tomato & courgette pesto risotto with walnut, parmesan & rainbow radish, and glazed lemon verbena tart with raspberry, elderflower & sherbet for dessert.

The Castle cellars hold an award-winning selection of vintage & carefully-selected New World varieties, as well as wine from the castle’s own 500-year-old vineyard. Hearty roasts are served every Sunday.

Thornbury Castle in Bristol is a 15-minute drive from Patchway Rail Station.

Overall I thought my experience at Thornbury Castle was OK value for money; the afternoon tea was well presented and effort had been made to select good teas (which were prepared well) and provide sandwiches and cakes that we're pleasing to the eye as well as on the palette. I'd give them 10 out of 10 for effort but not so much for execution with the exception of the scones which were excellent. The patisserie looked incredible but didn't wow in terms of taste and the sandwiches were ok but nothing special (and had been pre-prepared and kept in the fridge which wasn't ideal). I think it was excellent value; the price was fairly modest (£23.50 each) which I think wasn't bad but were I to go back I'd opt for the cream tea and just fast-track to the scones. The staff we're friendly, attentive and polite and the environment was pleasant (although I think it would have been better to take tea in the sitting room rather than the restaurant where folk were still eating lunch). I also think that the china could use some finessing to really elevate the experience.

Absolutely delicious lunch - the chocolate torte dessert was divine - had been going to Thornbury Castle for many years but had stopped in the last five because the food had got very disappointing- so with new owners decided to try again - glad I did - a mention for the server named Dan she was friendly, helpful and very efficient thank you.

This was an incredible experience. The library area was gorgeous and it was a real luxury to sit in arm chairs or sofas. The server with dreadlocks was an absolute hoot and we loved the banter he gave. It made the visit very relaxed and personable which is what we value when we go out. The sandwiches and scones were lovely. The cakes were a bit too rich, too much chocolate really. I’d like to see more variety. All staff were polite, helpful and so friendly so I will certainly be coming back!

I’m not a big fan of Thornbury castle my husband likes it. The sofas need replacing there’s vintage and there’s just old - they look a mess. Service is good the food really lets it down nice taste apart from cheese cake that was tasteless with a champagne sorbet which reminded me of lemon squash lollies we made as kids ! Monk fish tiny piece and so over cooked it was like rubber this dish needed a sauce the quail starter was ok but nothing special. It’s very odd being in a restaurant at 1.30pm with people eating afternoon tea I’d consider separating. Overall meal was cheap I definitely wouldn’t pay for dinner the quality in the cooking is just not there hence why no rosettes
