The afternoon tea was delicious, fresh, seasonal and beautifully presented. The environment was calm relaxing and comfortable. Best features of the restaurant were the historical setting.

The only Tudor castle in England to be run as a hotel, Thornbury Castle is an historic building which once played host to Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Classic heritage cuisine is served in the hexagonal-panelled main dining room, with its heavy oil paintings and roaring fires.

Modern internationally-inspired dishes are combined with traditional favourites, created using only the finest and freshest ingredients, sourced from the castle’s own gardens, local markets and nearby suppliers. Highlights on the Thornbury Castle menu include poached & grilled veal rump with smoked garlic, gnocchi, olives, broad beans & foie gras, tomato & courgette pesto risotto with walnut, parmesan & rainbow radish, and glazed lemon verbena tart with raspberry, elderflower & sherbet for dessert.

The Castle cellars hold an award-winning selection of vintage & carefully-selected New World varieties, as well as wine from the castle’s own 500-year-old vineyard. Hearty roasts are served every Sunday.

Thornbury Castle in Bristol is a 15-minute drive from Patchway Rail Station.

Beautiful restaurant lovely ambience. We had the tasting menu with the wine pairing - not good, food wasn’t great and for a tasting menu were too big a portion, as for the wine it was awful, with the oxtail soup (which was the tastiest course) they served a white port, when we questioned the young waiter he went away to find out and was basically told that they chose that as they were told it was a match - it was horrid, and the other wines weren’t much better and even more lack of knowledge - if serving a tasting menu the food needs to be impeccable small portions and the right pairing wine that needs to be served with knowledge!

Food not as good as previous time, e.g. pigeon was tough. Menu needs to be more varied and exciting. One staff member was a little arrogant. Overall, could better as it was in the past.

We came for afternoon tea on Friday 22.12. with the view of buying a voucher for our parents as a gift but felt disappointed with service and atmosphere, food was lovely but being squashed in a small area of a decent sized room did not make it feel very comfortable. Would have really liked to seen the real fire on to add to the atmosphere, maybe even play some music and been offered another drink. It made us feel like we were an inconvenience.

We had a great time for my 30th birthday here, we had royal tea for two. The service in the restaurant was excellent, as was it throughout the hotel , as we arrived early and were told we could look around the grounds.
As they’d been notified it was my birthday I was also given a special birthday treat from the castle, some truffles.
The royal tea was wonderful, a great selection of cakes scones and sandwhiches. I’d also notified them I was a vegetarian so they played my sandwhiches separately and made up some variations for me that didn’t contain meat or fish, which I was very grateful for. All of the food was delicious, the scones were light and airy, the tea was full of flavour, it really was a wonderful dining experience. I would definitely recommend to try it out!

An absolutely wonderful afternoon tea in a glorious setting.
The sandwiches and cakes looked and tasted amazing and the staff were so attentive, friendly and helpful.

We received 4 tiny finger sandwiches, no offer of variation. (I'm pregnant and vegetarian and I was given raw salmon, ham and chicken with lettuce)
I couldn't tell you what the cakes were, they were very fancy looking in bright colours and inedible.
The scones were ok. For £23.50 per person, it was very overpriced.

We had a special birthday tea . The food was delicious the staff attentive and friendly, Thornbury castle is a very special place. it was a dark November day the fire should have been lit in this country house hotel.

Very disappointing. This was a Christmas present from my daughters, they gave my mother, sister and I vouchers for an afternoon tea experience and were also going to join us. Due to my father passing away and my mother undergoing a knee replacement, we were unable to visit during the spring as planned. My daughter contacted the castle and asked if we could extend the vouchers until the beginning of next year, but this was declined.

This tainted the whole experience. The afternoon tea was average at best, very disappointing and would not recommend, based solely on the lack of understanding or empathy regarding our booking request.

The service was impeccable! The actual meal, although well thought out and beautifully presented, left one a little wanting in the flavour department. We both enjoyed our meal, but felt there was a slight je ne sais quois missing from the experience of the food. The ambience of the restaurant and the warmth, friendliness and professionalism of the staff ensured that despite this, we had a very enjoyable evening.
