The only Tudor castle in England to be run as a hotel, Thornbury Castle is an historic building which once played host to Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Classic heritage cuisine is served in the hexagonal-panelled main dining room, with its heavy oil paintings and roaring fires.

Modern internationally-inspired dishes are combined with traditional favourites, created using only the finest and freshest ingredients, sourced from the castle’s own gardens, local markets and nearby suppliers. Highlights on the Thornbury Castle menu include poached & grilled veal rump with smoked garlic, gnocchi, olives, broad beans & foie gras, tomato & courgette pesto risotto with walnut, parmesan & rainbow radish, and glazed lemon verbena tart with raspberry, elderflower & sherbet for dessert.

The Castle cellars hold an award-winning selection of vintage & carefully-selected New World varieties, as well as wine from the castle’s own 500-year-old vineyard. Hearty roasts are served every Sunday.

Thornbury Castle in Bristol is a 15-minute drive from Patchway Rail Station.

Lovely afternoon tea to celebrate my Mum's 80th birthday. Great to be able to take what we couldn't manage home! Enjoyed walking round gardens afterwards. Beautiful location. Would have preferred to leave gratuity of our own free will, rather than have it added onto bill as a matter of course.

Afternoon tea was lovely! Pleasantly surprised to see Roibos tea available & staff were happy for my daughter to have hot chocolate. I was just a little sad there were no cucumber sandwiches, but what we did have was lovely. Scones lovely & freshly baked. Cakes were the highlight for us - little imaginative bites - lovely! In the scores below I’ve given ambiance a lower score because a window view would have made it perfect, but totally understand that it’s a very old building & options will be limited.

The food was lovely and the service was impeccable. Beautiful surroundings and we felt completely as ease, nothing was too much trouble le and we were not rushed despite being there for almost 3 1/2 hours!

We had an afternoon tea. The food = (1) the sandwiches were good - sufficiently different to be interesting and sufficiently familiar to be tasty; (2) scones quite good - more fruit in the fruit scone would help (3) jam quite good - but not special (4) cakes - the balance between the poles of exotic and familiar tilted too far to the former - we left most of them.

Place, ambiance, gardens superb Staff very good, High tea was well presented, all home made, sandwiches interesting. Only never find they are enough if you are hungry, so I ordered some sandwiches off the menu. The cakes were different cannot get my head around a green meringue with cucumber!!! You have a choice of three menus . Personally I would have loved one that just had a cream tea and sandwiches as I do not like too much sugar, but the scones and jam wonderful.

All in all a memorable experience, with a few hiccups at the start which were sorted and it was a lovely day for all

    Had a great experience
Would say a little spray of oil on the kitchen doors. Like a whining dog.
Would definitely love to come back and would recommend others to go
