Restaurant description

The only Tudor castle in England to be run as a hotel, Thornbury Castle is an historic building which once played host to Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Classic heritage cuisine is served in the hexagonal-panelled main dining room, with its heavy oil paintings and roaring fires.

Modern internationally-inspired dishes are combined with traditional favourites, created using only the finest and freshest ingredients, sourced from the castle’s own gardens, local markets and nearby suppliers. Highlights on the Thornbury Castle menu include poached & grilled veal rump with smoked garlic, gnocchi, olives, broad beans & foie gras, tomato & courgette pesto risotto with walnut, parmesan & rainbow radish, and glazed lemon verbena tart with raspberry, elderflower & sherbet for dessert.

The Castle cellars hold an award-winning selection of vintage & carefully-selected New World varieties, as well as wine from the castle’s own 500-year-old vineyard. Hearty roasts are served every Sunday.

Thornbury Castle in Bristol is a 15-minute drive from Patchway Rail Station.

We had a lovely Royal afternoon tea, with finger sandwiches & a ham roll, with two scones each one fruit & one plain, they were warm, with plenty of cream & jam, then a selection of small cakes, the lemon was delicious, we could choose the type of tea, we couldn't eat it all so we're able to bring the rest home in a cake box, this was for my Mums 81st birthday, she loved the setting & the table cloth & napkins, the staff were very friendly & professional., would recommend.

The food & wine was excellent. Full flavours and excellent presentation. The building and grounds were fabulous to walk around. You'll be surrounded with plenty of history and tradition. The only let down was the time it took to get our food and the final bill. The table was booked for 13:00 but we didn't receive the food until 13:50 and we also had to wait 45 minutes after desert to pay the bill. So if you're a busy person, like myself, you'll probably want to consider that.

Very attentive and professional staff saw to our every needs. Very comfortable lounge area where we had pre-dinner drinks before being taken through to the main restaurant. The food was wonderful and the waiting staff were very knowledgeable on the menu. Thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience there and will definitely be back

We were given an afternoon tea as a gift. Booking via their website was easy. We were looked after very well. The service was prompt but not hurried and we had several top-ups of tea.

A disappointing experience. Although the castle is a lovely location neither the staff nor the meal lived up to it. Staff training is needed. And a closer eye needs to be kept on the kitchen. The “seared” pigeon breasts were cooked through and as a result were chewy and dull. Our waitress offered to get it redone but as all of us had chosen the same starter we declined. It was edible but not as described. The fish course was good although for me the fish was nearly overcooked. The two men chose bread and butter puddling which looked very dry. When we arrived we were shown the lounge. No explanation of how things worked, no offer to take our coats although we had said we had a reservation for lunch. Eventually we were offered a drink and the menu. Drinks ordered with the meal were slow to arrive. Why wasn’t the water jug left on the table when we had specifically requested it? There seemed to be plenty of waiting staff but they did not seem to be aware and did not anticipate our needs. These are things that should be part of front of house continuous training. As I said - disappointing.

Luxurious experience with five star service. Enjoyed every moment from the sophisticated glass of wine relaxing in the lounge, to the delicious Sunday lunch served in the castle turret! Fantastic!

No-one on reception on arrival. Had to find someone to show us where to have afternoon tea. The room was very authentic, just a shame you couldn't see out into the grounds to take in the beautiful setting. Afternoon tea was lovely and the service was excellent.
