The only Tudor castle in England to be run as a hotel, Thornbury Castle is an historic building which once played host to Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Classic heritage cuisine is served in the hexagonal-panelled main dining room, with its heavy oil paintings and roaring fires.

Modern internationally-inspired dishes are combined with traditional favourites, created using only the finest and freshest ingredients, sourced from the castle’s own gardens, local markets and nearby suppliers. Highlights on the Thornbury Castle menu include poached & grilled veal rump with smoked garlic, gnocchi, olives, broad beans & foie gras, tomato & courgette pesto risotto with walnut, parmesan & rainbow radish, and glazed lemon verbena tart with raspberry, elderflower & sherbet for dessert.

The Castle cellars hold an award-winning selection of vintage & carefully-selected New World varieties, as well as wine from the castle’s own 500-year-old vineyard. Hearty roasts are served every Sunday.

Thornbury Castle in Bristol is a 15-minute drive from Patchway Rail Station.

Staff very friendly, couldn't be more helpful, food very fresh and tasty. Beautiful building inside and out, well maintained. Only negative was no skimmed milk. Almond or soya was offered as an alternative but not to our taste.

We are familiar with Thornbury Castle and visit for special events. The service was fine, but the starter of lobster was minuscule and pretty tasteless. The Arctic Chard was excellent and we enjoyed the ginger flavours. The Wine Prices are exorbitant and we chose the Castle's own wine which at £45 was outrageous, but the menu was fairly priced at £42. We enjoyed our evening as the history and atmosphere are special, especially the Library. The dining area was a bit dark.

It was unfortunate that the lady that the two of us had arranged the visit for tea was too ill to be with us - she telephoned to give that information on Sunday morning.
I decided to bring the other lady to have tea and advised Thornbury Castle accordingly. This was not the first time that we had had tea there and, as before, and also with dining, the service and attention was excellentgl1 3js

I like to be a positive person and I respect people's hard work. So I generally don't bother writing negative reviews because I appreciate the time and effort people make to do their jobs. However, assuming you really do want feedback so you can make some adjustments, I'll be honest. The first impression was the canapés. I was neutral towards the items, not going back for second bites, but I was amazed that the popcorn was completely stale. My husband and I agreed not to say anything because it seemed "free." But that didn't make for a strong first impresssion. We had made our reservation with great hesitation having read reviews...mixed reviews with high price is a risky combo. But we moved into dining room hopeful. I ordered the ricotta gnocchi. I did not eat even half and asked the waitress for clarification on how the dish was meant to resemble gnocchi. I thought maybe I was misunderstanding. My dish seemed to be ricotta cheese and peas but I couldn't detect any proper gnocchi pillows that I could recognize. Perhaps they were forgotten entirely? Or maybe there was no binder or leavening or something else so that they ended mushing up into a texture that mimicked the ricotta. There seemed to be only mush. Seasoning missing as well. On the contrary, my husband's sous vid cod was so overly salted (a brine that was too salty?) he couldn't finish it. Luckily my lamb was ok though I wished I'd had a salt shaker for a touch finishing salt. I liked the turnips but I couldn't cut through the green onions. My husband's fried sweet potato strings (with the cod) along with my falafel (with the lamb) were soft. Definitely missing the crunch of "freshly fried." Perhaps they'd been made well in advance and then held?

I did enjoy the cheese trolley. There was a nice selection of cheeses and the portions were generous.

I must be honest and admit we had a very hard time paying all that money for a meal with the issues it had.
    Thank you!

Service excellent and beautiful location, attentive staff when we sat in the gardens. However, a little disappointed having previously had afternoon tea on a number of occasions, scones were small and had to ask for enough cream and jam to serve 8. Happy birthday was iced on our cake plate last time, a lovely touch, but no reference to the special occassion this time but was asked when booking.Seated in a very dark area when asked not to be!(did request the library)

Went here for Father's Day! First time here never again!! Receptionist lovely, was put in this tiny dark room away from main restaurant 3 tables in room, waiter was to overpowering couldn't understand him & cocky, Sunday lunch is a set menu unless your told or it's not even on the menu cards, two course no matter what, when asked for the bill waiter said are we sure we want it for prices I do not no! When he came back with bill he then said we would be charged for two courses when we only had the main each & didn't no this was a set menu! We said didn't no & took the starters off, with all that this roast is not all that the best roast we have had is ronnies in thornbury brilliant, but we all felt shunned in this room and judged by my my husband arm tattoos & funny enough the only other people with tattoos we're sitting in the same room! I will be celebrating our 25th anniversary next year & enquired about rooms told by waiter look on website my husband said would be nice to see rooms but no shunned again we will never go back here & already told my parents about it this is a no go place for next year celebration, looks a beautiful place but no!!! Let down Father's Day

Sadly I found out afternoon tea very disappointing. It was served in a small room and there was a party of 7 immediately next to us, this made it hard for us to easily talk. The scones were served cold and were not fresh, they were dry and crumbly. There was no hot water served to top up the tea pot so we had to keep asking more. The lid to the tea pot did not match the pot and kept falling off. The total bill came to £70 pounds for three , overall I did not feel the experience was worth the price, even in such a lovely setting.

I would highly recommend Thornbury Castle for dining. The food was wonderful and the service was fantastic. Lots of choice on the A la carts menu and the wine list was extensive. We had a wonderful meal!
