At the gates of Edinburgh Castle, The Witchery is a unique, distinctive restaurant with an enticing gothic appearance. The opulent interior and Scottish cuisine befit its status as James Thomson's flagship dining venue.
Near to historic landmarks such as the Scottish Parliament, the Museum of Scotland, St Giles and the National Galleries, the Edinburgh surroundings of The Witchery have established it as a highly desirable destination for city locals, tourists and celebrities from around the world. Only ten minutes' walk from Princes Street, George Street and Edinburgh railway station, this enviable location is enhanced by the internationally renowned a la carte menu. Traditional Angus beef, lamb and game dishes are highlighted alongside seafood specialities ranging from Scottish lobster and rock oysters to smoked salmon.
A formal yet relaxed ambience makes The Witchery a popular Edinburgh for entertaining and impressing business clients, as well as for couples enjoying a special meal or groups holding a private function.

Wonderful service, lovely setting and delicious food. Ideal for a romantic dinner during a weekend away in Edinburgh.

We returned after10 years and were very disappointed. There was no atmosphere or anything relating to the theme or name this time. The meals were small and grossly overpriced. There are far better places to eat in Edinburgh now and we will not return. We felt as if we’d been “fleeced.” Obviously it is now a place for one off tourist visits.

Steeped in history and located just by the castle this restaurant has a beautiful secret garden for intimate dining. Venison was delicious.

Overpriced and left feeling ripped off. £10 for single measure of gin is disgusting.

Location favolosa, solo luce di candele. Noi abbiamo prenotato nella sala secret garden. Atmosfera magica. Personale gentilissimo, italiano tra l'altro, come noi. Premurosi, sorridenti, pronti a soddisfare le nostre richieste. Ci hanno spiegato e consigliato. Vino rosso shiraz/riesling ottimo. Incantevole dentro e fuori.

Excellent Haggis, beef, parfait terrine, Champagne

This is somewhere that I have wanted to eat at for a long time and, now that I have, I have to say that the wait was worth it. I see many reviews that seems to suggest that this is an overly expensive place to eat, given the food that is served and, if you base your judgement solely on the meal, there is some validity to that, but this place isn't just about the food. The setting is wonderful, it's right next to the castle, the decor and ambience (I chose the original dining room, not the Secret Garden Room) is perfect and the service is very good. As for the food, sure it is a fairly staid menu compared to many modern restaurants, but it is perfectly prepared, well presented and, when eaten in such beautiful surroundings, I feel, worth every penny. I ate the Haggis starter which could have been a little more adventurously seasoned, followed by the steak. The steak was excellent, cooked to perfection, tasty and served with excellently chosen accompaniments, and this was followed with the selection of deserts on offer, all of which were superb (the Pistachio ice cream is sublime)
Eating in a place like this should make you feel special, and it does this very well.

The meal was OK - as a vegetarian I found some good choices - but nothing extraordinary. Prices are massively inflated - cost us more than twice 2 other meals we had elsewhere that were better.
Obsequiousness of the waiter was very annoying - I'd rather be left to eat my meal in peace without being fawned over all the time.
