Excellent food, excellent ambience. Being slightly picky but the service was a bit on the relaxed side i.e. just slightly too slow

The White Onion is a charming restaurant, elegant but informal, in the centre of Wimbledon village. It has a matching, seasonal menu with some fine touches: exceptionally good bread; a fine venison pate with pistachio, prune & brandy (and caperberry) was followed by a really good main of monkfish with fennel, spatzle, a tuile and light beurre blanc - a really beautifully balanced blend of flavours and textures. My husband had perfectly cooked cod with artichoke and crispy tapioca although the 'ancient grains' were perhaps a touch too earthy. Lush mashed potato and broccoli dipped (we think) in a gram flour batter was delicious and both worthy accompaniments. Alas, we were too full to attempt a dessert (with myself being 3 months post bariatric surgery so somewhat challenged) but we would have happily chosen any of those on offer, all of which sounded exquisite.

Service was attentive, professional and unobtrusive - so rare these days but lovely to experience. The food is matched with a good range of wines with many by the glass; some very good ones too if prepared to spend a little more; always great value if you know where to tread; perhaps just a little shy of some more aged fine wines.

I've been dining in Wimbledon (both village and the town proper) for some 20 years - and one can eat very well across a range of cuisines, from some of the better chains to delightful one-offs. The White Onion is a fabulous place for a really good meal - and the first place that has real Michelin class as opposed to just aspiration. Worth keeping an eye on.
