As its name would suggest, The Vaults in Cambridge is an underground restaurant & bar serving international cuisine on a historic street linking Trinity College and Kings College.

The décor is modern and minimalist, allowing plenty of space for the socialising that takes over as the evening wears on. The bar is open until the early hours every night and serves a range of draught and bottled beers, wines and cocktails in a backdrop of varied music.

The Vaults menu features a range of sharing dishes that make a good starter, followed by fish and meat options, as well as pasta and risotto. The desserts on offer are mainly English classics, including the Cambridge Burnt Cream trio.

The Cambridge Arts Theatre, Lion Yard shopping centre and bustling market square are all within a 10-minute walk from The Vaults Restaurant & Bar. Local buses also pass down Sidney Street, a 5-minute walk away.

We were there on a very rainy weekday lunchtime and were the only diners so the ambience lacked a certain something but the food, drink and service were all great - it's a shame thre weren't more people there to give s bit of atmosphere. But then, most people wouldn't have ventured out on such a day!

I really like the tapas dishes, everything had lots of flavour and it's a nice way to dine. There was a hidden table in a cellar cove which had loads of character. The restaurant has a few different dining sections, so has a nice intimate feel even though the decor is quite minimalist. You could easily miss this restaurant as it's underground, but I would definitely recommend it!

We went here with some friends from work and we thought it was a good place for groups. Maybe not the place to choose for a quiet night out though, as it can be quite loud. The food was really good and we were pleased how quickly it came. The only thing that some of us didn't like was the fact that it's underground (though we knew that before we went), so a couple of people thought it was a bit claustrophobic. The rest of us thought it was fine though, as the lighting is quite good.
