Set on the bank of the River Thames, against the picturesque backdrop of Wolvercote, The Trout is an historic building which traces its roots to the 17th century. Now offering al fresco dining and serving modern British cuisine, this cosy, country pub and the riverbank it sits on have provided inspiration for literary gems such as Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.

With chefs given the opportunity to train at cookery schools in Spain and Italy, The Trout restaurant menu features modern signature recipes made using the finest seasonal ingredients. As well as creative daily-changing specials, favourites include Mediterranean mezze, seared chicken breast with sweet potato rosti & buttered British beans, and spit-roasted chicken with lemon & garlic confit. A kids’ menu and Sunday roasts also feature, and desserts include rich vanilla and chocolate gelato with home-baked cookies.

The result of a treasured partnership with Rothschild wine merchants, the cellar showcases many fine wines, while token real ales and premium spirits are found at The Trout bar. Nostalgic British nibbles and eclectic sharing platters bursting with international flavours offer more laidback dining.

The Trout in Oxford is a 10-minute drive from Oxford Railway Station.

Friendly and efficient service in a lovely old building. Probably several cottages converted into interesting cosy rooms. Middle of the road menu but tasty . Beautiful outside setting although it was evening and raining!

This is an old favourite of my partner and me. First date pub, anniversary pub and proposal pub. Very rich in local history and folklore, beautifully presented pub with fine service and fine dining.

Two menus were provided, a Christmas menu and a standard menu. We ate from both menus, the food from the standard menu being very good, but the food from the Christmas menu being dry as if been re-heated.

Our booked table was awaiting us on arrival. I selected a turkey roast and my wife ordered a mains course of scallops. When the meals arrived the roast looked good, a huge plateful with a good selection of vegetables and large slices of turkey. Unfortunately the scallop dish was sadly lacking both in appearance and size. The 6 scallops were simple lightly fried small discs, not the large 'in shell' scallops that would be more befitting the price of £22. The fresh bread or roll that my wife requested arrived as thin toasted slices of baguette. There was no cranberry or bread sauce available to accompany the turkey. We were given a discount from the bill by the very helpful and courteous waitress. The pub was quite busy so maybe most customers do better than we did ?

    Excellent setting and atmosphere.
Right by the river Thames and a large car park.
The restaurant was very full both inside and out, but despite this the service was excellent.
The food and service were of the highest quality and I would throughly recommend this restaurant.
