    Having eaten, we looked at reviews for The Stargazy Inn. We were amazed to see how many good reviews there were, as unfortunately this was not our experience.

    However, there were some reviews that matched ours exactly. All had booked the a la carte, and we can only conclude that had we booked the taster menu our experience would have been better.

    To be offered only two choices for starter, mains and dessert was our first disappointment.Not much of a choice!

    The food we had was minimal. We expected the dishes to be small, and expected to be quite happy with this. However, there is small and there is tiny! We can only assume they were the same as the taster dishes, which would have been fair enough, but not for a la carte. We were very disappointed, and although we have smaller appetites than most people left hungry. We had previously eaten at Rick Stein's Sea Food Restaurant where their dishes were equally good but of an acceptable size.

    We left Stein's happy to pay for the good quality food we were given; we left Stargazy angry at paying a similar price for what we had.

    It was extremely disappointing. The a la carte menu isn’t really that, it’s a choice of two starters, two mains and two desserts. The portions are insultingly minute and very expensive.We felt that we had been ripped off. Food tasted ok.

    The marmite starter was a strange choice. It was very good as marmite on toast goes but I do not want that for dinner and in my opinion it did not "go" with the rest of the courses. You would have been better off starting with a pate or a small risotto maybe. The rest of the courses were magnificent, well balanced and full of flavour. Left a big impression. Scallop perfectly cooked and the oyster was the perfect compliment and I thought the tomatoe dish was positively inspired, incredible flavours. The fish course was equally magnificent as was desert, The peanuts in the desert should not have worked but it did quite brilliantly. The lamb dish was good but on a big plate the component portions looked very small but the taste was again excellent. That meal reminded me of the first meal I had with a then young Nathan Outlaw at the Black Pig in Rock. I knew then he would make and so will our new kid on the block if he can survive winter. The restaurant is small and when full is a bit noisey but I can forgive anything for the quality of the food. Music may be a bit load and the choice of music seriously questionable. Maybe netter with no music or a bit of soff jazz The staff were friendly and knowledgeable so no problems there. Might have ben nice to go into the bar area for a drink first. I think you might be missing a trick there. Am already telling all my foodie friends so don't give up. It was a very pleasant surprise although my wife thought she was going across the road to see Nathan but even he would have struggled to beat that meal, Marmite on toast excepted. Great evening and at a third of the price of you know who I have nothing to complain about. Keep up the good work Rgds John Wickins

    Very good location and easy parking across the road. Greeted on entering and seated straight away. The drinks menu could be improved by including a full description of the non-alcoholic cocktails. One of ours was not nice - but the barman obviously noticed one of our party didn't like it and came over to offer an alternative.
    The food menu (when eating in the bar area) is limited. We struggled to find something exciting and settled for risotto and lemon sole. Both were average quality. No salad or trimmings come with the food and have to be ordered separately. Portions are smallish and we needed to supplement with bread which we had to wait for ( it was on order). The other 2 dining rooms are reserved for the tasting menu diners. Both were empty at the time of our visit - 7-8pm mid August.

    Excellent meal. We had the 5 course taster menu which was fantastic. Each course delivered flavour and balance in abundance. Hard to choose a favourite as all were simply superb, but the lamb course probably just sneaks it as our No. 1. Plus, the staff were outstanding.

    Service top class staff all knowledgeable about the food and wine they were serving. We had the 7 course taster which was our kind of food my wife does not do shell fish or crab this was replaced with an equally delicious alternative. Will certainly make the trip again.
