Inside a snug 17th-century building with crackling log fires and exposed beams, The St John's Chop House showcases the finest succulent steaks and chops alongside carefully chosen local ales and an extensive wine list.

The finest cuts of meat feature on the St John's Chop House menu, ranging from classics like sirloin, through to 10oz delmonico steak, or juicy pork t-bone, all served with signature coleslaw and other indulgent sides. There are Chop House sausages, confit duck leg, and seafood recipes like coley fillet with spiced crab cake. As well as light bites like haggis fritters with beetroot and whisky mayonnaise, there are also vegetarian delicacies such as vegetable and walnut bake wellington.

Indulgent desserts at The St John's Chop House Cambridge include elderflower and whiskey jelly with champagne sorbet, and the classic option of sticky toffee pudding. Local ales are championed, as well as British lager and cider, while the wine list focuses on the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France.

Also serving gluten-free, dairy-free and children's menus, The St John's Chop House is rich in British dining tradition, and sits 12 minutes' walk from Cambridge Rail Station.

Staff considerate about request for chilled pea asparagus and watercress soup instead of hot soup because it was a hot humid evening. All the food was good.

Good food, adequate service. But could have had another slice of lamb, say my wife.

It's always pleasant to go there, since it's convenient for us locals and we know that the food and wine are reliably good. But there is little sense of our being regular customers. The service is always friendly if occasionally a tiny bit inept, but one generally feels well looked after. Love the odd special bits, like haggis fritters; the bread is wonderful; love the warming winter food like suet puddings and excellent seasonal vegetables and imaginative salads. I enjoyed my sea-trout last night but could have done with more samphire, since there were only a few strands on top and I love it. I don't like the piped muzak, but it's fun to hear Blackadder in the loo.

This was our second time at St John's Chop House, having visited the last time we were in Cambridge. Staff were pleasant, food cooked well and a nice ambience.
