Edinburgh’s oldest surviving watering hole, The Sheep Heid, is a restored village pub & restaurant which is said to have been a favourite among monarchs & poets in the past. With a beer garden offering al fresco dining in warm weather, and rustic interiors including high-backed leather armchairs by crackling log-fires, this gastro pub serves a seasonal menu of uncomplicated British food.

Sourcing ingredients from trusted local suppliers, The Sheep Heid Inn menu features wholesome recipes based around the garden, land and sea. Sample hand-pressed burgers, beef & ale pie with cardamom carrots, or sea bass with potato gnocchi, while old-school puddings include warming crumbles, custard-lathered sponges and decadent brownies. Not forgetting younger diners, a kids’ menu includes miniature versions of British classics.

A partnership with the celebrated Rothschild wine merchants means The Sheep Heid cellar is stocked full with an eclectic list of world wines, while indulgent wine flights allow guests to sample a variety of bins. Seasonal beers and barrel-kept ales also feature, as well as thirst-quenching cocktails and rich coffees.

The Sheep Heid in Edinburgh is a 7-minute drive from Brunstane Rail Station.

The Sheep Heid was hopeless. Despite booking, on arrival we were told that we could not be offered food for > 1 hr after our booked time as a large party were being fed upstairs. We returned home with no food. There was no apology or proper explanation.

The service was extremely slow and very rude. We arrived 12:05 where we were only 2 tables at the time, was celebrating my husband's birthday. They took 14 minutes to deliver our drinks and forgot our starters and the manager deliver our mains 25 minutes after ordering , and just turn around angry with our mains and walked off!No apology offered we even felt guilty as well asking for our starters . The girl who took out order only checked back 5' after we finish our startes. We order more drinks and desserts only by calling over the staff . My main was lamb roast and was likely warm and the Yorkshire pudding was dry as a wood I didn't wanna complain not to ruin my husband's birthday.
When I order the dessert politely asked for cadle , she deliver two espressos that were bitter and had no cream on top. Then she slam the dessert and walked away ! I thought she was not suitable for customer service, she couldn't interact or make us feel welcome, when I asked for the bill she brought and returned for payment , but didn't bring my change until I've asked some male staff, who was asking to point who picked up the money. I felt very disappointed from the whole experience. I have been at the past weekdays for lunch and group parties , but I've never experienced that negativity before.
