Dating back to the 18th century, The Running Mare near Chelmsford has country views and lovely gardens from which to enjoy them. Offering well-loved British pub food, the pub has an open and light atmosphere, with large, old-fashioned windows, and a simple interior design. Boasting this simplicity are rustic features such as a warming hearth, Chesterfield armchairs and charming candles.
Hearty Sunday roasts and trusty British dishes head The Running Mare menu, and a range just for kids offers mini versions of pub favourites. Signature Vintage pies offer fillings like beef & merlot with buttered peas, while The Running Mare ‘Vintage classics’ menu includes lemon & garlic-roasted chicken with seasoned chips.
Paying homage to the Great British pub, the Vintage Inn bar stock includes cask-conditioned beers, real ales and a meticulously compiled wine list. Thirst-quenching offerings include seasonal non-alcoholic cocktails and freshly-pressed juices, and rich coffee is brewed freshly throughout the day.
While in the tranquil countryside, The Running Mare is but 6 minutes’ drive from Chelmsford.

Awful! This is the third time I've been to the Running Mare and have been told that there are lots (and I mean LOTS) of things off the menu and not available! I will never go back again! Very disappointing!

We had a very enjoyable evening, the staff were very attentive, helpful and friendly, the food was extremely well presented and well cooked and was nice and hot. All our requirements were met. They seem to have a new menu which was very good.

Worse meal of my life

Very disappointed. We have been going to the Running Mare for 26 years and after our meal last night, will probably never go again. The service was poor, very miserable waitress. The food was shocking.....our starters took over an hour to come out. The soup was barely warm, and prawn and lobster cocktail was miniscule and served in a warm bowl. When we eventually received our main courses, the side leaf garnishing was so past its best and extremely limp. The ribeye steaks which were ordered medium, were over cooked and tough as old boots. The couscous and pineapple salad had no pineapple or dressing, barely any couscous and was a good 90% lettuce, which was not in the description. As for the desserts, well wish we had not bothered. The eton mess looked like cat sick in the bottom of a bowl and the apple pie had been microwaved and was a soggy mess. After speaking with the assistant manager, who was very nice and friendly, we were offered a discount if we returned on another occasion but after expressing our views that we were unlikely to return she did remove the steaks from our bill. We have never complained in a restaurant before and do not like complaining at all but the food served to us was totally unacceptable and should never have even left the kitchen.

We have used this restaurant before and it has been fine. Unfortunately on visiting the restaurant on Monday 12th December the experience was less than fine. We arrived with no booking and was given table No. 52. Admittedly this seem to be the only table available but in all honesty I wish they hadn't bothered. Iwas next to the fire exit which was extremely drafty. As we were eating it seemed to get colder and colder. I mentioned this to a member of staff who turned up the heating, which soon became apparent that this was a waste of time as the radiator wasn't working. This was pointed out to the same member of staff who responded with "oh, I'll have to have a look at that". My gut feeling tells me this was not something he wasn't already aware of.
I also had a booking at this restaurant with a different group of friends for Wednesday 14th December, which I was a bit hesitant to keep. The was cancelled for us by the restaurant an hour before we were due to arrive. The reason given was a problem with the kitchen. Would I return? At the moment NO Get your act together 'Running Mare' and maybe I will. And thanks to The Foz and Raven for a very warm comfortable dining experience.
