Awarded an AA Rosette for its British and European cooking, River Room Restaurant at the Oxford Thames Hotel overlooks the Thames and the hotel’s scenic gardens. Adjacent to the restaurant is The Conservatory, serving lighter bites for lunch and dinner, as well as a quintessential afternoon tea.

Designed by a MasterChef 2016 contestant, the eclectic River Room menu begins with goat’s cheese crème brûlée, English beef steak tartare, confit egg yolk and ciabatta crouton as well as home-cured salmon gravadlax. Skilfully prepared mains include lamb rump with roasted vegetables and the superb Barbary duck breast.

Choose between a seasonal dinner menu, a casual menu available throughout the day, and of course, Sunday lunch. Indulge in expertly crafted classics like beer-battered haddock or carefully crafted dishes seared pigeon breast with homemade fruity black pudding and local tastes from Gloucestershire.

Overlooking the river, picturesque grounds and the St. John’s College barge, the River Room Restaurant and Conservatory offers the best in both contemporary and classic cooking. This rural idyll is just 3 miles from Oxford city centre.

The setting was beautiful, the service was excellent (especially Nikita) and the food was brilliant. The food arrived very quickly, if it wasn't so good I would be alarmed at how quickly, but the chef must have not have been busy. I did notice that there were some very minor ingredients missing from a few dishes, my lamb was missing the powdered mint for example, but I wasn't too bothered as it was excellent anyway.

I was sad that there were no windows where we could look out at your beautiful grounds, The waiter was helpful and kind, the waitress also, but she needed to be dressed to suit the ambience. We were brought water to drink and then a pot of tea with a long wait for food. It came looking good on the three tiered plates. The sandwiches were cold, the scones good and the cakes too coated with artificial cream. Anyone interested in food would not approve of the quality of the bread and certainly would not want to eat the cakes.

It was Afternoon tea on a Monday so sadly, there were no other guests in a rather large conservatory. I didn't feel the background music was particularly suited to either the venue or occasion. The sandwiches were traditional finger style and okay, the scones nice and warm but the clotted cream was rather hard (possibly kept too cold) and jam sparse. The look of the small cakes was spolit by over decoration including the use of bright green colouring. All three had flavourings that were too intense making the coffee strong, the chocolate too rich and sickly and the lemon too tart.

This was advertised as a riverside conservatory and we specifically asked for a table with a view of the river as we were celebrating my mother's 84th birthday. Our table could not have been further from a window and the conservatory is NOT beside the river. With the exception of a dozen or so conference delegates who were just finishing lunch when we arrived, the conservatory was empty. Not a very nice experience and we had rather hoped for something a little special, something above and beyond since I mentioned in my booking that it was a special occasion.

We booked a celebratory afternoon tea for a birthday event. The food was very good, especially since 2 of us in the party of 3 were vegetarian. The tea was great being served in a large pot for each person, and we managed to get at least 3 cups of tea each from our pots. The staff were friendly and attentive. The restaurant was very relaxing and not busy at that time of the day. The area / location was lovely, set along the banks of the Thames. A very relaxing and peaceful area.

we arrived a little late due to very heavy traffic, but the staff were pleasant and took us to a table overlooking the river and the boat.Food was very good and presented very nicely The two members of staff that served us were very efficient and friendly, which made the whole experience enjoyable and good value. Thank-you
