We came for afternoon tea as it was a friends birthday. We had to wait for the scones as they were not ready and they were very hot when they came out. The restaurant area that we were in had nice decor , but I was a little disappointed when the staff started laying up for breakfast ( at 2pm in the afternoon)while we were still there as well as a few other diners. I also got the impression once we had finished eating the staff were waiting to clear away!!!

Me and a group of friends when there as a 50th birthday treat and had the unlimited prosecco afternoon tea. Overall a great place, we were made feel welcome and very special and we all enjoyed it very very much. The unlimited prosecco was very generous, which is always a bonus. If I have to point a negative it was that sweet to savory ratio was biased towards the sweet. Would definitely go back there again.

Afternoon Tea. Food was very nice. More cakes than sandwiches which we would have preferred the other way around. Prosecco was a nice quality. Good selection of Teas.

Saturday evening booking for 4. Well presented room with bar at the front & grill at the rear. Somewhat disconcerting that there were virtually no diners & the bar was quite full. First off, I can't or the group can't complain about the food - it was fine but nothing stand out. The issue overall was shambolic service. Lack of knowledge of the dishes when asking about them, wine list has plenty of choice, but the staff were clearly not familiar with the list - it felt like they needed numbers, not names. A highlighted nut allergy of one of the guests, seemed to be ignored as if it was odd for us to inform them. There was repeated delay with getting drinks to the table, to the point one of the party ordered a glass of wine before finishing the current one and on one occasion, when it did arrive on time (maybe the bar had calmed down), the waitress wanted to remove the other half full drink. There was a group party in the basement &;somehow the smokers from that group seemed to be going out and standing near a ventilation system that came into the area where we were sitting. We informed the manager and at first disputing this, he could not avoid the fact as the smell was evident. We ordered desserts and after 20 minutes, the manager came over to apologise & say the chef had left. We offered coffee/tea but we said this was already late & we were so fed up with the way the evening had progressed that we wanted to go. So, he agreed to discount the bill of a bottle of wine. When the bill arrived, the bottle was still on. He then came back to say that the waitress said there had been two bottles. This was incorrect and he amended it, but it did come down to the fact that the staff around were not trained. The manager was extremely apologetic & the only one that was aware that the service was poor so we didn't labour the issue as he looked quite exhausted. I'm sorry to write a bad review like this, but it needs to be highlighted as this is also meant to be a good hotel.

I booked afternoon tea for a Mum and daughter treat.
Our waitress was delightful and guided us through a lovely couple of hours.
The choice of teas were great and we tried quite a few. We also treated ourselves to prosecco and our glasses were topped up politely throughout.
The sandwiches and pastries were lovely but for me it was the teas that I enjoyed the most.

A friend and I came to the Mandolay on 15/7/17 for an afternoon tea and generally this was enjoyable, the selection of teas available were particularly impressive. However there were a few situations that occurred that detracted from my enjoyment. Firstly when we arrived my booking couldn't be found, it turns out that my name had incorrectly been listed as 'Anne Gough' so I had to convince the waitress, that, that was me it had clearly just been written down wrongly. Then when our sandwiches arrived, one of the flavours was salmon, I mentioned twice when making the booking that both me and my friend are vegetarians so we would appreciate it if no meat could be served. When I asked the waitress whether we could have a replacement flavour, she replied saying that I should have said during the booking that we didn't eat fish - as mentioned during the booking process I said twice that we were vegetarians not pescetarians (vegetarians who eat fish) and had to explain that fish still counts as meat. The waitress said that as the restaurant was getting busy she'd have to ask the chef whether any more sandwiches could be made, I do appreciate that it was getting busy but we were hardly asking for something elaborate! Thankfully this was rectified and new sandwiches were delivered but not before another waitress who gave us the replacements, again argued that I should have said something when booking. Going forward I would suggest that if a customer states they are a vegetarian you assume that they won't eat fish, like most restaurants do, or you advise staff when taking a booking to clarify whether the customer eats fish or not. Once rectified the sandwiches and the cakes were very nice. When leaving the restaurant, our waitress asked whether we had a voucher for payment, when I said that I had already paid, she couldn't find a record of my payment, it turns out my name had been listed correctly this time which caused more confusion! General no attention to detail.
