Restaurant description

Tucked away in the quiet village of Ashington, The Red Lion – Pulborough is a country-style pub & restaurant housed in a restored 16th-century building with an outdoor dining area for the warmer months. With rustic wooden furniture, plenty of soft armchairs & roaring fireplaces, there are plenty of cosy corners to enjoy a hearty dish of modern British food.

Sourcing ingredients from trusted local suppliers, The Red Lion menu features wholesome recipes based around the garden, land and sea. Sample hand-pressed burgers, beef & ale pie with cardamom carrots, or sea bass with potato gnocchi, while old-school puddings include warming crumbles, custard-lathered sponges and decadent brownies. Not forgetting younger diners, a kids’ menu includes miniature versions of British classics.

A partnership with the celebrated Rothschild wine merchants means The Red Lion – Pulborough cellar is stocked full with an eclectic list of world wines, while indulgent wine flights allow guests to sample a variety of bins. Seasonal beers and barrel-kept ales also feature, as well as thirst-quenching cocktails and rich coffees.

The Red Lion in West Sussex is a 15-minute drive from Pulborough Rail Station.

Fabulous varied menu with something for everyone. Accommodating with regard to making changes or additions to some of the dishes to suit dietary requirements. Half of our party had dined there before. The half that hadn't have said that they would definitely return. Staff were very attentive and nothing was a problem. You could tell that they all worked well as a team. Six of us dined on a Saturday night and we felt neither rushed nor left waiting for more drinks etc.

We arrived and sat at the bar - said we had booked a table and it was 25% of bubbles deal we had booked -told that it was only Thursday - asked them to check - now three people involved - confirmed it was Friday too so we asked price or prosecco and told normally 19.95 but now 16.00 - so not 25%. - says all bubbles but then told not by the glass - which actually although misleading wasn't to bad as not a bad price anyway. My husband ordered a glass or prosecco for me and a San Miguel for himself - he requested that I get my drink first - no - he got his and I did not get one at all - requested again and got a flat glass, finally got another one. Asked if they could wipe, the bar as it was sticky, they gave me the clothe and I did it !!!!!! Not told any specials (soup etc). My husbands glass was removed from the table and not asked if he would like another drink. Finally someone came back to,the table and he managed to order us both another drink . Food all ok and served in a timely manner but wow felt this place lacked leadership and staff training. Potential to be a great place just needs attention to detail.

Five of us ate at the Red Lion, including one child. It was to celebrate my grandson,s birthday. The member of staff was attentive and patient whilst we decided what we would like to eat. The table was laid up, with clean utensils etc. The food took about 25 minutes to arrive after giving the order. The menu had a good range of choice and the child's meal was of a good size. All the dishes were hot and attractive to the eye. The whole group had puddings. which were tasty and attractive. A very pleasant evening meal was had by all.
