Restaurant description

Tucked away in the quiet village of Ashington, The Red Lion – Pulborough is a country-style pub & restaurant housed in a restored 16th-century building with an outdoor dining area for the warmer months. With rustic wooden furniture, plenty of soft armchairs & roaring fireplaces, there are plenty of cosy corners to enjoy a hearty dish of modern British food.

Sourcing ingredients from trusted local suppliers, The Red Lion menu features wholesome recipes based around the garden, land and sea. Sample hand-pressed burgers, beef & ale pie with cardamom carrots, or sea bass with potato gnocchi, while old-school puddings include warming crumbles, custard-lathered sponges and decadent brownies. Not forgetting younger diners, a kids’ menu includes miniature versions of British classics.

A partnership with the celebrated Rothschild wine merchants means The Red Lion – Pulborough cellar is stocked full with an eclectic list of world wines, while indulgent wine flights allow guests to sample a variety of bins. Seasonal beers and barrel-kept ales also feature, as well as thirst-quenching cocktails and rich coffees.

The Red Lion in West Sussex is a 15-minute drive from Pulborough Rail Station.

We both enjoyed our lunch. It's a year since I last visited and it great that it's still a reliable and friendly pub to visit and I envy the local residents I was only passing through en route. The food is still good but I admit disappointment with the Chicken Liver Parfait not being the same as before when it was always served in the small Kilner Jar with the traditional layer of fat on top, served with thick Brioche toast! Delicious. A permenant order of mine then. But yes we would definitely return if in the area again and my daughter still meets friends there from miles out of the area.

The service was excellent, the staff very friendly. Unfortunately on this occasion we were slightly disappointed with the roast dinner. We thought the roast potatoes were burnt around the edges, my rump of lamb was a bit tough, as was the roast pork, which our friends had ordered,It was nonetheless quite tasty but not to the standard we have experienced on previous visits to your establishment. We didn't mention it at the time as we didn't want to spoil the occasion or make fellow diners uncomfortable. Speaking of uncomfortable, it's a shame there weren't enough cushions for the dining chairs.

We were a group of 6ladies. Our waiter was attentive' the restaurant was lovely and warm(a must during winter dining) the food and value were excellent. Downside we waited quite a while for our meal and some items were not available, Ie.Worcester sauce, spinach.

I had steak here for the first time and it was absolutely delicious. Disappointed that it didn't come with more vegetables or a choice of potatoes (it came with triple cooked chips which were tasty but I would have preferred a jacket potato) don't let that put you off though. It was an absolutely delicious meal and we can't wait to go again.

At first we thought we had been forgotten. Very good service with drinks but then after half an hours wait we had to find someone to come and take our food order. That said, everything from then on was spot on. The ambience was very good. Very tastefully (scuse the pun) decorated for Christmas. There were 7 of us and all our meals were superb. The Chocolate Bomb dessert was to die for. All in all a very good experience. Thank you.

The food has always been great here. Nice friendly staff, good vibe. Never had an issue. The service on the other hand unfortunately isn't as good. Every time we vist for dinner, we've had to wait for stupid amounts of time. Even last night we actually had to go ask to order our drinks and meal after waiting half an hour. You could accept this if the restaurant etc was busy, but it wasn't at that time. If the service got improved, Red Lion would be a great place to visit weekly.

Very pretty pub/restaurant. The staff are very friendly and courteous. The food was very good, piping hot and portion sizes were just right. Service was not the fastest, but as the food is clearly cooked to order not just microwaved, it is worth the wait. The only negative is that on the two occasions we've been there, there is always something not available from the menu. Other than that, would recommend without reservation.
