The award-winning Red Lion Inn in Hinxton is a gastro pub in a Grade II listed 16th-century building with large walled garden. The original bar is still in place, while the newer restaurant is in a style in keeping with the historic nature of the inn.

As well as an AA rosette, the Red Lion can boast accolades including being named one of the top 4 gastro food pubs of the year in The Publican Food & Drink Awards 2010.

Since the menu is the same throughout the pub, you can dine where you like: on one of the comfy sofas in the bar, under the oak rafters of the restaurant or in the landscaped garden complete with dovecote, arbour and terraces.

The dishes change with the seasons and only the freshest produce is used, mainly from local providers. 4 local real ales are available at the pumps and several wines on offer are from the surrounding counties.

Set in the pretty village of Hinxton in south Cambridgeshire, the Red Lion pub is a 10-minute drive from Duxford Imperial War Museum and around 25 minutes from central Cambridge.

We visited this pub for Valentine's Day as they had an interesting looking menu. We weren't disappointed - the food was excellent quality, nicely presented and very good value for money. The staff were friendly and helpful and didn't seem rushed. In fact the whole operation was very smooth and calming - it felt totally different to other restaurants we have eaten at on Valentine's Day. Apparently their beer garden is in The Times Top 10 too. We didn't see it, but if the interior is anything to go by, I'm sure it's lovely.
