Offering classic British cuisine with a contemporary touch, The Puffing Billy is a charming restaurant nestled in the quaint village of Exton. Large windows, patterned flooring and wooden furniture make for a comfortable, cosy setting.

Local ingredients such as beef and venison from Dartmoor feature on The Puffing Billy menu, alongside fresh fish from Exe Estuary and the Devon coast. Favourites include Aberdeen Angus meatballs with red pepper coulis and parmesan shavings, and Puffing Billy sustainable local fish pie with mashed potatoes and mature cheddar.

Classic dessert recipes are served with a dash of innovation, with offerings like soft centred lemon and rhubarb pavlova, and white chocolate and rosemary crème brûlée. The carefully compiled drinks list at The Puffing Billy Exton feature real ales from local breweries alongside lagers and wines with several available by the glass.

Serving excellent British cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere, The Puffing Billy restaurant is a short walk from Exton Rail Station.

We booked for Sunday lunch to celebrate our son's 19th birthday - he has just started at Exeter University and we don't know the area very well, but had seen a sign to the Puffing Billy and the Trip Advisor reviews looked good so we decided to try it. When booking, I'd mentioned it was his birthday and we were given a lovely round table in the window - very impressed with the whole "feel" of the place - nice decor and very friendly staff. Good menu - great to see gravadlax which we all enjoyed as a starter. Also a good selection of wines - very nice Sauvignon Blanc! We mostly had roasts for our main course - impressive portion sizes and good quality too! Very attractive puddings which tasted as good as they looked, - and nice to see dessert wines offered by the glass. All rounded off with great coffees, especially the latte! Thank you - we all had a great time, - a special thank you to the waitress who took such good photographs of us. We will definitely be back.

We were welcomed as we entered and we chose to go directly to the table. Drinks came at once and we perused the menu's. there is a very good choice plus specials. Delicious starters. My husband chose 'fish and chips' for main course which may sound ordinary but he declared the best ever. I chose from the specials and had brill with scallops and mussels, plus additional vegetables. Delicious. The service was friendly and efficient. A lovely evening.

It's a shame there is no consistency of service. Most staff are really great but just one that's not can ruin the experience. Our last visit was for valentines day and the effort made was really lovely but again, a couple of things that just spoilt it. Whilst most of the food was delicious, tasty and beautifully presented, the main dishes were warm, almost cold and the sirloin was chewy. Such a shame as we wanted it to be so perfect and it so could have been. We also felt rushed to leave our table 2 Hours after arriving [...] Although 2 hours was sufficient, to be reminded they needed the table twice within 2 hours, it still spoilt the moment.

Have dined here before on at least 6 other occasions. Dined at 12.30pm on a Wednesday lunchtime Food presentation good and quantities reasonable. Service was a little slow by their usual standards
