Everything was fabulous catered for my daughters lactose intolerance and wrote a birthday message in chocolate on a plate with her dessert

The first Scottish venture for impassioned brothers Chis and Jeff, The Pompadour by Galvin offers stunning French fine dining. Guests can lounge with expertly mixed aperitifs in the speciality Pompadour cocktail salon.

Blending the finest Scottish produce and a pioneering French cooking style, signature dishes from the Pompadour menu include roast Scottish Chateaubriand, violet artichokes, ratte potatoes & garlic cream or apple tarte tatin to share.

Over their careers, the Galvin restaurant brothers have gained awards including 2 Michelin stars, 10 AA Rosettes, and were named Chefs’ Chef of the Year in 2011. First opened in 1925, The Pompadour in Edinburgh was inspired by the lavish leanings of Louis XV’s chief mistress.

The stunning Renaissance-style dining room is recognised as one of Edinburgh’s finest, with corniced ceilings, ethereal murals and rich velvet swept throughout. The shopper’s delights of Princes Street are just 2 minutes’ walk from The Pompadour restaurant. Please note, the restaurant observes a smart casual dress code.

Met by a very well prepared lady who had worked out who we were. We ordered the Discovery Menu with matching wines. Tap water was served quickly. Disappointed only white bread was offered and only twice. As the bread was just about the only carbs with the meal more bread would have been good. Service was excellent. Only issue was we were often served by a non UK waitress who spoke very quickly and it was very difficult to make out what she was saying. The sommelier was excellent and brought good conversation when he had the opportunity to chat. The matching wines from all around the world were excellent with the food.

We had a lovely evening. The start was not great when we decided to have a drink in the bar and found ourselves in the company of some very loud guests and a rather iffy choice of music (my advice would be to leave Pearl Jam and Neil Young to the bars on Rose Street and go for some nice jazz),. Service here was very slow and rather slap dash. Pompadour was much much better. Nice ambience (though it could really do with a serious overhaul; that wall paper belongs in an upmarket retirement home) and service was excellent. the food was superb. i especially loved my tartare of haddock. My partner loved his main of duck. Our wine was great as well. I suspect we'll be back but perhaps for lunch as prices are very high indeed. While everything was very nice, i am not sureit was worth the full £200. (you asked for me to be honest...)

We love the Pompadour by Galvin. This restaurant is beautiful. The tables are widely spaced out, giving you a sense of privacy but not deserted. We have always had great meals here and the service is consistently excellent. The only minor criticism I would have is that the table next to us was getting loud and rowdy (especially after 4th glass of wine!). Whilst the waitress and waiter set out to be friendly and chatty with them, they themselves were getting drawn into the noise - further fueling the rowdy atmosphere and only got the two diners even louder.

Exceptional food served by considerate and courteous staff. Elegant setting with a beautiful view of the castle.

This was the second time that we had chosen a tasting menu at the Pompadour and it was a disappointment - the first time, which was a few months ago, had been a real pleasure. Whilst the food this time was the very best, the service was sadly lacking on a dinner costing over £100 per head.
We booked the tasting menu and yet were then offered the à la carte menu as if our booking had never happened. As for the wine pairing, the wines were reasonable but often arrived after the courses had been served. We were not convinced of the sommelier's abilities - one of our party was a wine expert.
Until one of our party asked for a menu, we had no idea what was to be offered and what wine would be paired. Had this menu been available from the start, our guests would have been able to decide upon drinks earlier during the dinner.
When one of our party expressed an inability to eat strawberries for dessert, a member of the serving staff was very abrupt and appeared to resent the need to accommodate this need and change the dessert for this person, rather than being more upbeat and helpful. This was not the expected attitude in such a restaurant. The dessert was substituted by the cheese course. Surprisingly, no other dessert was offered.
Overall, whilst the food was generally of a high standard, the service was a real disappointment being disjointed and at times disorganised. I hope that this latest experience was the exception and that our next visit will be more positive.

Superb greeting at Concierge. Someone from restaurant came down to take us up to the restaurant, take our jackets and show us to our table. Service staff were very attentive, warm and friendly and food was exceptional. Quality dining with warm, friendly ambience and ‘feature’ surroundings making it a perfect dining experience.

Service, staff and food were excellent the only area of concern was the use of lamb and beef from south of the border when our country prides itself on the quality of our products
