Excellent food. Steak was fab, lots of choice on menu. Would recommend this restaurant and would definitely go again.

A sophisticated country pub just outside of Tunbridge Wells in Kent, The Poet uses carefully-sourced ingredients to create a refined British menu. Steeped in 20th-century history, the pub is named after the famous World War 1 poet, Siegfried Sassoon.

Rye Bay scallop on The Poet at Matfield menu is served with a Jerusalem artichoke veloute and black truffle, while a braised lamb shoulder main course includes red pepper puree, spinach and Mediterranean cous-cous. Each main dish is accompanied by a carefully-chosen wine recommendation, which come from The Poet’s artisanal cellar stock of wines.

A locally-brewed line-up of cask ales features at country pub The Poet, and is regularly refreshed with new offerings. Just a stone’s throw from Sassoon’s birthplace, the pub is a beautiful grade II-listed building, characterised by low-beamed ceilings and exposed timber floorboards.

The Poet at Matfield occupies a rural spot on Maidstone Road and runs frequent social events, such as wine tastings and a paella night.

I have to say we were rather disappointed, having been before and enjoyed it enormously. The menu was all on blackboards, was quite limited and the food was OK but nothing spectacular. The service was attentive and quick.
