Restaurant description

With a history stretching back to 1590, The Plume of Feathers is a beautiful example of a lovingly preserved British inn with a modern menu. Relax in snug surroundings and indulge in sumptuous Italian recipes complemented with fine wines from across Europe.

The Plume of Feathers menu is perfect for sharing, with two to three plates per person letting diners experience a great selection of flavours. Start off with a rhubarb negroni, then sample the pig head ravioli with sage butter and balsamic vinegar, or arancini balls stuffed with beetroot and gorgonzola. Tastes of the local area are showcased with the Dorset charcuterie and cheeses, there are River Exe mussels with arrabbiata sauce, and baby pizzas with sumptuous toppings.

Classic Italian desserts at The Plume of Feathers in Dorset include tiramisu, limoncello cheesecake and gluten-free gelato. Over 30 Italian wines are served by the glass, and there are Italian beers served as well.

A charming fusion British and Italian dining, The Plume of Feathers is opposite the world-famous Sherborne Abbey, and a 5-minute walk from Sherborne Rail Station.

We had an excellent meal at The Plume in Sherborne on Saturday evening. Our table was ready for us when we arrived, service was delightful, food delicious, everything was Covid protected and overall we had an absolutely lovely evening. We’ve been to The Plume on several occasions and it has never failed to please. We had a child, teens and a grandparent with us this time and everyone had something they particularly enjoyed whilst also trying everything. Thank you Plume!

Restaurant has a lovely ambience inside and very pretty outside area, although no ash trays. All staff were excellent about Covid protocols which was assuring and made an additional late request for an extra diner. Strangely the male staff were exceptional and friendly, the ladies were cool and appeared disengaged for some reason. Favourite dish was the beetroot and Gorgonzola

Fantastic gluten free options throughout the menu and a dessert that was truly scrumptious. So lovely have a choice of options that are gluten-free rather than just one or two.

Our first visit. We booked a table for early on a Friday evening. They have a "small plates" menu, which we have not experienced before. We ordered lamb and chicken dishes plus squash as a vegetable and potatoes. These are designed to be shared. The waiter did tell us the food comes as it is ready. The squash came first, followed by the lamb about 5 minutes later, then the chicken shortly afterwards and finally the potatoes. The food itself was very good but we are traditionalists and find this idea a bit strange. At least the desserts arrived complete and they were also very good. The Covid precautions seemed very sensible (hand sanitiser on entry, facemasks except when sitting at the table, tables well spread out, staff wore masks.) The staff were very friendly and service was efficient.

From start to finish it was a fab experience. Great welcome, considering these difficult times for hosting. Fab mine host, she was great. Fab wines by the glass, amazing list, it was heaven! great house Cava, and the tapas style Italian small plates were just so good. Loved the ambience of the Plume. Very busy for a Friday. All the dishes were really good. All was fab.

Superb Italian home cooking, served tapas style. Short, well-chosen and reasonably priced wine list. Friendly and attentive (if slightly chaotic) service. Somewhat austere but not unwelcoming ambience. Perfect for lunch or supper.

It’s not always easy to find vegan options, even harder to find ones that taste good. Here we found both. The service was great. We felt very safe with the Covid measurements put in place. The only ‘complaint’ I have is that the restaurant was a bit cold. But that’s hardly an issue.
