Overseen by twin brothers Alex and Oliver Burnside, The Plough & Sail offers a modern British menu with eclectic world influences. This sensitively restored, country farmhouse-style hideaway features a spacious restaurant and cosy bar.
A tempting range of menus at The Plough & Sail feature dishes from local suppliers, while cellar is stocked full with world wines and ales from local breweries. Highlights include oysters with shallot vinegar, seasonal fish pie served with a local mixed leaf salad, and duck breast with fondant potato, braised red cabbage, plum tartlet & jus.
The tempting dessert menu features classic creme brulee with a ginger flapjack & poached apricots. In summer, the courtyard at the back is the perfect place to spend a lazy Sunday.

Excellent selection of food, both on main menu and specials board. Very enjoyable evening.

Have tasted better food purchased from a supermarket. The food was served on cold plated and the food it's selfwas served not very warm

As a family of 4 starting the Christmas celebrations we couldn’t have found a better place. The menu catered for all our different needs and the staff were very welcoming and friendly. We will definitely be back to sit by the warm fire too.

Overall the food was good, particularly the starters. Our main course experience was mixed, with my chicken and risotto dish tasty and nicely cooked and the two who had the pork from the specials menu happy with theirs, this despite the wrong dish initially served, with the waitress very apologetic and rectifying situation quickly. She was also attentive in respect of one of our number regarding a dairy intolerance. The one dish that was not impressive was the sea bass, which to be honest did not inspire, the fish showing blood near the bone and placed on the plate, together with three boiled potatoes and a side dish with a very dry salad, with no dressing offered and no tartar sauce or other accompanying sauce. To be honest, all six of us commented that it had literally been thrown onto the plate. By that stage we didn't want delay, as we were aware of the performance time. The deserts were enjoyable and varied. Certainly the presentation of the fish meal should have embarrassed the chef!

The Plough & Sail holds loads of memories for me. David Grimwood cooked delicious food for my 18th birthday......years ago.
My friend and I had a starter and pudding. From start to finish great service. Not rushed. Good food, the chocolate pudding was lovely. Thank you and have a great Christmas - Alison

Cracking, delicious Sunday Roast on a chilly day, spoiled by clearly stressed staff intent on resetting the restaurant for evening service despite it being just after 2pm. Trying to eat whilst squirting table cleaner next to you let’s down the food offer. Felt like we were in the way and a nuisance more than welcome guests. Hopefully just an off day.

Lovely interesting food, with good service, My only issue was that even we booked the table quite early we were put under a bookcase close to the coffee machine in a wide walkway without any ambience altogether. As this was a special outing to meet friends for a special pre Christmas lunch I was very disappointed ??.

My wife and I had a brilliant Sunday lunch at the Plough and Sail. We both had slow roast belly pork with French peas and baby potatoes for our mains and found it delicious. For dessert I had a Irish liqueur cheesecake with chocolate ice cream which was lovely while my wife had warm poached winter fruits with stem ginger ice cream, crystallised orange peel and shortbread biscuit and thought it the best dessert she had ever tasted. Our only criticism was the rather disorganised service. For example only a spoon but no fork provided with the dessert so with no waiter or waitress around my wife had to fetch her own.

Lovely meal well cooked and well presented. Staff are all friendly and welcoming. We go there regularly as it's one of the few local restaurants that is fully accessible for my husband who uses a wheelchair for mobility.
