A welcoming village pub with traditional style and modern gastropub flavours, The Old Lion is an inviting spot for leisurely meals. Dogs are welcome in the bar area, and there are crackling log fires to relax by with a glass of wine or cask ale.

The Old Lion menu is a modern example of British gastropub excellence, with classic dishes sitting alongside contemporary flavours. Artisan breaded brie with a red berry jelly is a great sharer to start off with, moving on to pub favourites like cod and chips or homemade pie of the day. There are rustic pizzas cooked in the stone oven, and succulent steaks and burgers from the grill menu too.

Enjoy generous Sunday roasts at The Old Lion in Rugby, featuring a choice of slow-cooked meats with all the trimmings. Local cask ales and ciders are served at the bar, as well as a concise wine list and extensive choice of international spirits.

On entering the Old Lion we were greeted by a lovely lady who escorted us to our table and introduced our waiter for the evening. The waiter was very polite and professional. The menu was very varied and we changed our minds numerous times but settled on lamb koftas and home made scotch egg for starters, fillet steak and homemade chicken pie. The meal was delicious. After desert we settled in the bar and enjoyed a few guns from the large variety they offered. We would strongly recommend a visit to the old lion, friendly warm welcome with excellent food and service at a reasonable price. We will definitely be returning.

I don’t normally complain, but both food and service was well below par. The drinks took 15 minutes to arrive, I ordered the scallops, described as scallops with bacon and pea purée. This turned out to be 2 measly scallops, a squeeze of pea purée smaller than the pad on my little finger. With not even one full rasher of bacon of which totalled over £7 and I could eat in two mouthfuls. Another of my party had stale bread arrive with their soup. The drinks both soft and draught pints were flat and we had to chase them to be redone. Finally, the waiter didn’t know how to reprint a card receipt and had to wait 5 mins for everyone to have a try. Despite an inadequate dinner the waiter who served us was very polite and that should be a credit to him.

Steaks were fantastic and the deserts were the best we have eaten.

We both had their Sunday roast and couldn't find fault with it. Our only problem was that there was too much and neither of us could clear our plate! Thoroughly enjoyed and will definitely book again.

The food was good, clearly freshly prepared. The waiter was very polite and formal, though we had to ask for the check even though we’d finished and been sat there for a long time, though service throughout was great so I imagine he just didn’t want to make us feel rushed. The atmosphere was lovely as the decor was nice - some nice paintings and layout plus the music was relaxing/soothing.

First, we were put in the alcove which is too dark and the candle wasn't lit. The performance of the waiter, to find a t-lite from other vacant tables that wasn't burnt out and his antics with the matches, was farcical. It was only 7.30 so the candles hadn't been replaced from the night before.. The starters came with no garnish or adornment which seems so unprofessional. I ordered the steak off the specials menu and it was awful, full of sinew and had the appearance of herringbone. This was supposed to be the beef that the butcher keeps for himself... to give to his dog I think. The dessert wasn't much better. The red berry trifle was all custard and cream with the odd berry. If we had been on our own I would have complained but I didn't want to upset our friends as we were celebrating a birthday. The overall experience was horrible and, having loved the place and the food for quite some time, will probably not go again .
