Restaurant description
A historic Canterbury site dating back over 500 years, The Old Buttermarket is a traditional British pub and restaurant from iconic pub fleet Nicholson’s. Formerly connected to Canterbury Cathedral by a network of underground tunnels, The Old Buttermarket a proud sponsor of the 2013 Great British Beer Festival.
Since Nicholson’s pubs were first established in 1873, these traditional British inns have become synonymous with warm hospitality, hearty pub food and a speciality range of ales. As well as always featuring British pub classics like beer-battered fish & chips and gammon & eggs, the Old Buttermarket menu is complemented by a rotating selection of pie, sausage & chop and fish specials for each season.
The Old Buttermarket bar is always stocked with exquisite gins, warming whiskies and fine wines to pair with favourite meals, and there’s always a superb range of seasonal and regional real ales on offer. A constant at the bar is the St Austell-brewed Nicholson’s Pale Ale, made with Cornish Maris Otter malts, and a hand-picked blend of English hops.
The Old Buttermarket is tucked away from Canterbury’s bustling Lower Bridge Street, by the Canterbury Roman Museum.

Firstly, booking a table through this site does not work! They say their system does not connect... So we weren't booked in. Very friendly staff, for our party the food ranged from good to excellent. The chips were fab! I had grilled chicken burger which was very watery and a bit tasteless, everyone else said the various other burgers were great. The toilets were pretty grubby and I think it is only the loo that gets the clean. The doors and handles were disgusting.... I would go again but not my first choice.....

Very friendly, good food but had to wait nearly an hour for food as only one chef working. Had to ask how much longer food would be. There was no communication as to how long we would have to wait.
