Very disappointed to find the carvery unit was broke so we had to have table service for our roast. Not ideal for me being a vegetarian in our party as I specifically chose Oakland’s for the carvery so I could choose my own vegetables.

Macey our waitress gave an excellent service.

I booked a bar food table based on the website, which offered a range of meals. Once there, it turns out only burgers were hot food. This was slightly disappointing but not a disaster.

We didn't know if we had a reserved table, or were to sit anywhere, no staff seemed bothered to inform us either way.

We were informed the website menu wasn't available, and we would have to have the 2 or 3 course menu, rather than fish and chips etc, and that some items were off the menu. This was not preferable, but was not a deal breaker, so we sat at a table.

Some workmen were installing a new TV for the football, and without warning started drilling into the wall we were sitting it, we were given the option to move.

However, we had ordered a glass of water when we got our drinks, upon seating at the table we noticed the glass had lipstick on it, so I returned it to the barman and asked for a different one. The barman who had served us water from the bar, decided to take this glass of water out to a back room, and returned with a "new" glass of water. We decided not to drink from it!

We decided to find somewhere with an atmosphere more akin to what we were hoping for!

Service poor - walked past 10 members of staff before being asked whether they could help. Food poor - chicken burger was left over chicken from carvery previously in the day in a bun, all food tasteless apart from the chips which had so much salt on them we were practically eating a load of rock salt without the potato! The desserts were also poor and all frozen food just heated up. It seemed as though the food was pilled high for the masses with little or no taste - hardly food for the diserning pallet! The toilet were grubby (you can always tell what a place is like by their toilets). The exterior and interior of the establishment needs to have some serious money being spent on it. The only nice bit seemed to be the terrace area. On entering we were faced with a sign directing left for the wake and right for the wedding, we were just looking for the only other life event of a christening!! Being that we went when the World Cup was on, there was a lot of 'tanked-up' individuals watching that on a large screen directly next to the dining area and when any goal was scored all of the football fans were heard cheering very loudly - hardly a romantic meal setting! Overall we won't be going back, we couldn't wait to get out. Its a shame as the place is perfectly situated and needs to have an overhaul on the exterior and interior of the building as well as the food.

Service staff were friendly and helpful, but the food was very mixed. We had a Sunday roast, the meat, gravy and veg were nice, but the Yorkshires were soggy/chewy, despite looking great. The desserts were a different story! Firstly they run out of vanilla ice cream so the person who ordered that had strawberry and chocoltae, the person who had the pear crumble then got strawberry ice cream with it, which was a bit odd. Neither people who ordered the pear crumble could finish it as they said it was way too sweet. I ordered sticky toffee pudding and could smell burning the second it was placed in front of me, once I opened it up it was essentially a lump of charcoal, no idea how that made it out of the kitchen. We were then given an incorrect bill. All a bit disappointing as it was our anniversary, it feels like the place has gone down hill since becoming part of the Best Western chain, sadly.

When we got there and got shown to our table the waitress gave us a menu with just the carvery on it for £ 3.95 as she said this was served till 6.30. When I booked this and looked on line it said 2 courses for £15,95 which is what we thought we were going for as one of our party is not keen on just carvery , no where on the website that this option is from 6.30 and also on my confirmation booking it did not state this. We all ended up having the carvery but we were very disappointed as this was supposed to have been a Birthday meal for one of our party. I think that if you are booking on-line it should tell what times the menu's start and finish.

The whole experience was nothing less than a shambles. I booked the table for my mothers 60th surprise birthday party and quite frankly the oaklands ruined it. I rallied round 20 family members and got a pre order, hand delivered at and took a look at the area we would be sitting. On the night the pre order was lost. They should have told me this before hand. But no we were sat at the table for almost an hour until someone approached us.I told them I could find the order but we were then told that they didn't have any of the dishes we wanted. To be honest I am very very upset that the whole.night was ruined. And my mums 60th.will not be remembered for having a great time. Some compensation and an apology would be gratefully received.

The hotel/restaurant was very busy, as it was Mother's Day. It was a really bad first impression, as just getting into the reception of the hotel was impossible, with so many people moving in and out. I would say that it was poorly thought out and when we did eventually get the table we booked, it was 30 mins late and the service was slow, but by no means the slowest I have experienced. The food was worth the wait though and I would return for regular service or a celebration, but not for a day such a Mothers/Fathers Day, or a holiday meal (Easter, Christmas)
