Found within a secluded wing of the iconic National Gallery, The National Dining Rooms offers modern British cuisine. Along with a fresh food counter, guests can look upon expansive murals depicting scenes of yesteryear.
Fresh, British produce forms The National Dining Rooms menu, from summer salads, to warming soups and hearty sandwiches, which can also be enjoyed in the cosy café area. For something more substantial, diners can select from refined dishes such as pheasant and partridge terrine, followed by Dover sole or a homely shepherd’s pie.
There is also a selection of artisan cheese and British charcuterie on offer at The National Dining Rooms in London. Try the caramelised chocolate mousse with vanilla shortbread for dessert. Brought to you by the renowned Peyton & Byrne group, the restaurant also offers splendid views over Trafalgar Square
The renowned afternoon tea shouldn’t be missed, nor should the occasional interactive tasting sessions and wine tasting classes. The National Dining Rooms restaurant is a 3-minute walk from Charing Cross Station.

It was dreadful! The booking was not acknowledged as the National Dining Rooms has changed and is a walk-in cafe now. We were moved to another restaurant at the National Museum which we didn't enjoy. We had particularly wanted the Dining Rooms as they have a lovely view over Trafalgar Square, but it is a mess now. It was a huge disappointment as it had been planned as a special Christmas outing. The staff there said I couldn't possibly have booked because they changes their offer in September.

Disappointing. I was hungry but we didn't want a whole set tea. I would have liked a sandwich. But nothing on the menu. So I had to have a portion of cheese. It wasn't great. A third of it was inedible. It wasn't possible to complain as I was with two other people and didn't want to make a fuss.
Also it was v cold and draughty by the window. The whole room was chill and unwelcoming. Staff ok I suppose but I felt he could have offered more in the way of food. He could have checked what sandwiches were there in the self service section. I have eaten here before and found it better.
I won't bother again.

Very disappointing. Poor service from waitress who appeared rather sullen. Menu promised unlimited tea - so we asked for more and they simply added hot water to (already very weak) tea. Tasted horrible. Questions about where were our ham sandwiches were never answered. The service charge (12.5%) was added to the bill - made it look like there was no option but to pay it.

A rather lack lustre experience, the sandwich fillings were distinctly average, the scones were hard, dry and it took a long time to discover any fruit in them whilst the cakes again were nothing special.

The restaurant is in the new, Sainsbury, Wing of the National Gallery. It has reasonable natural light, particuarly if you get a table in the part nearest the windows. The tables are a good size but perhaps a little close together, especially along the bench on the far side where diners seated at the corner of the bench can dominate the soundscape of the space. The food is quite fancy, good choise of fish and vegetarian, interesting cheese choices.
The main problem is service - and in fact the management of service. You don't get a dedicated waiter and the wait staff are hard to hail. The service was slow from getting an acknowledgement at the table to getting the food. The staff didn't seem bad, just disorganised and the kitchen was slow. The waiter dedicated to bringing out drinks rarely knew which table to take them to so that is an information system problem. The kitchen didn't have the cheese I ordered so just sent out a different one - and it was blue when I ordered a non-blue cheese. When I selected a different one, it took so long that we gave up on it. The waiter was apologetic and I think he should find a different job. This shambles is not going to allow him to give good service!
I'd recommend the food and location to a friend but warn them about the service problems. If they have plenty of time and are armed to deal with it (once you get the attentions of a waiter, don't let them go!), it might not bother them.
