Restaurant description

Inspired by its world-famous setting of the National Gallery, The National Café serves classic British and modern European food in timelessly elegant surroundings. Passionate about British produce, ingredients are carefully sourced.

The National Café menu features rich flavour combinations including starters of buratta with fennel radish, lemon and mint, and a Goosnargh duck and pistachio terrine with blood orange salsa. Main dishes are equally appealing, and include Cornish monkfish, cod and pollock fish pie with langoustine and spring leeks, and 14yo Galician bavette with datterino tomatoes and gremolata.

Desserts are an indulgent affair, and include salted caramel and cinnamon doughnuts with toffee sauce, and steamed chocolate pudding with hot chocolate sauce. Bar snacks, wines and cocktails can also be enjoyed at The National Café London.

The National Café at The National Gallery is just seconds from Trafalgar Square, and is a 2-minute walk from Charing Cross Train Station.

Dishes displayed on a la carte menus are representative of the type of food available at the restaurant.

We were having a pre theatre meal but the service was slow and inefficient, no cutlery on the table, the water we asked for never arrived, the first course took almost 20 minutes to arrive. The food was good but nothing special but was not cheap either (there was a cheaper set menu but the choice was a bit paltry). All in all, not a particularly successful evening. Good wine menu but that was about it. They need to train the staff to be better.

It was ideal for what we wanted - lunch before a matinee at a nearby theatre. I like their (new to me) arrangement which separates the dining area from the exit path

The food was a bit disappointing - not a lot of choice and my steak sandwich was all bread and lettuce with two minute pieces of steak. The waiter we had was very offhand, always missing when you wanted him; eventually other members of staff helped us and then our original waiter came over and started grumbling how much he had to do - not very professional.

We used to lunch at the National Cafe when visiting the gallery, to enjoy the ambience created by the gorgeous period deep mahogany coloured wooden wall panels and enormous old window shutters. They recently closed for refurbishment, which included sacreligiously overpainting the cafe's erstwhile glory with a bland shade of grey. It now looks as distinctive as Starbucks or MacDonalds. As for the food, it was as distinctive as the vandalised decor. The best we can say about what we ate is that it was exceptionally dull.

Very nice, friendly service, good food and blessedly quiet. I have the pre-theatre menu and it was very good.

Delicious food (especially the octopus) and charming staff. The 2 course lunch menu for £19 is a real bargain. Thanks to the team for making my friend’s birthday so memorable.
