The atmosphere was very nice, and our salads were delicious. I was disappointed by the fact that there was no prix fixe menu available even though there was a notice outside the restaurant saying there was. Was also surprised to be charged £4 for bread.

Inspired by its world-famous setting of the National Gallery, The National Café serves classic British and modern European food in timelessly elegant surroundings. Passionate about British produce, ingredients are carefully sourced.

The National Café menu features rich flavour combinations including starters of buratta with fennel radish, lemon and mint, and a Goosnargh duck and pistachio terrine with blood orange salsa. Main dishes are equally appealing, and include Cornish monkfish, cod and pollock fish pie with langoustine and spring leeks, and 14yo Galician bavette with datterino tomatoes and gremolata.

Desserts are an indulgent affair, and include salted caramel and cinnamon doughnuts with toffee sauce, and steamed chocolate pudding with hot chocolate sauce. Bar snacks, wines and cocktails can also be enjoyed at The National Café London.

The National Café at The National Gallery is just seconds from Trafalgar Square, and is a 2-minute walk from Charing Cross Train Station.

Food and atmosphere were good but...
our pre Theatre dinner was so slow that we ended up paying for four desserts which we didn’t even see, let alone have a chance enjoy.
We explained the situation but were not offered any refund

Very nice ambience and tasty food. The only downside is that the staff don’t get the service charge unless you give it in cash

Comfortable table, and located as requested at time of booking. Service was efficient and attentive, and food good

A last minute meet up..this venue and location was perfect. Service was good..a couple of small errors on our order but nothing to spoil the experience. The cafe looked equally appealing and would return.

Pleasant atmosphere, nice treat after visiting the Gallery. Good tea selection, there were 3 of us, we each had a different blend and were all very pleased and had refills. Presentation of the food was attractive. Lovely mini scones, perfect size when presented with 3 tiers of food to get through. My only complaint would be the cakes and pastries were too sweet, we were only able to taste them, not eat them all. We ate the scones though!

Superfood Salad was lovely - but the Caramel Doughnuts - were bombs of pleasure. Wonderful Clean, crisp. Peaceful. Pleasant and fresh. Even Dad enjoyed his meal - he doesn't like his food 'mucked about with' and likes it 'naked' (without sauces) - a lovely meal. Sara too was a delight - friendly, helpful, but not intrusive... We only drank tap water and coffees - so can't say about the wines.

Excellent food and wine at great value - main dish and glass of wine for £10. Sadly this is spoilt by the poor service of untrained staff. My food took half an hour to arrive. There is a pre-theatre menu but I don't think diners will get to the show on time.

Awful experience. Staff friendly but inefficient. Extremely slow service we had to walk up to them to get their attention, starters poor, but mains good, cheese stale. One table walked out and everyone else complaining. Would not visit again.
