Very welcoming staff - polite, courteous & attentive. Food really excellent. We always enjoy our time at the National Gallery cafe on Trafalgar Square. It’s so convenient to get to from Rochester,Kent.

Convenient location. Pleasant environment. Good starter - cold tomato soup - like gazpacho without the additions. Good desserts - profiteroles and pineapple carpaccio. Main course menu was very limited for vegetarians , or even non-meat-eaters who also eat fish. I have tried their vegetarian dish on a previous occasion and it tasted of very little. The best bet was the all-day brunch, which had a fishcake, claimed to be hake and haddock but also contained salmon. My two meat-eating companions enjoyed their main courses.
Slow service - busy restaurant with only one inexperienced (though pleasant) waiter and a maitre d so the hostess had to wait as well.

Excellent waiting service. Best I have experienced for a long time. Brunch food was delicious and we'll presented. I will come again.

The food was excellent. My friend had the fish cakes and I had chicken avocado salad - we shared delicious polenta chips. The bus boys were extremely efficient and polite. I was happy to be given a booth banquette table as requested. The only downside - I feel the maitre di’s were not as attentive/observant as they could have been. I had to literally wave my arm around in the air to gain their attention to take our order. But, overall I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. My friend had not been to the National Cafe before and wondered why? She loved it! It is a gem of a restaurant.

Excellent service, polite, discreet and cheerful. Not too crowded either, will certainly use again.

Excellent service. Very pleasant ambience, lovely and quiet even at the height of lunch hours. The food is good but the portions are very small, especially at those prices. Almost no chicken in the chicken salad, tiny amount of crab even in the large size. I would recommend it for lunch with the warning that one should NOT bring an appetite.

The service was good, but the food could have been better. The "green leaf salad" was a half lettuce that I had to cut up myself. The side of chips looked good, but they were slightly too firm (undercooked?). The price reflected the Trafalgar Square location, and a mandatory service charge of 12.5% was added to the bill.

They said they had not received our reservation but were able to seat us in the bar area

Very easy to book online, good atmosphere, very friendly and swift service, food (two Caesar salads, a beanburger with polenta chips, half a bottle of wine and three desserts) were good - we had a very enjoyable meal catching up with each other after my (cycling) guests had finished work nearby. We booked for 6.45 pm, got started a bit later, and had finished without being rushed by closing time at 8.30. For a slow and chatty meal like ours with another course, you might want to start a bit earlier.

My lst choice, in fact, had been the restaurant over the National Portrait Gallery - I love its view over Trafalgar Square, but it is closed on Tuesdays. It was something of a special occasion as it was my god-daughter's 30th birthday and I was taking her and her mother to Fiddler on the roof to celebrate and we wanted to have a quick bite to eat beforehand. I had never been to the National Cafe before, but now I will recommend it: we were given a special table for 3 with a pink rose on it. We had a light, salad-based supper (just the ticket!), with 3 glasses of wine. The service was impeccable. It was on the expensive side, but worth it!
