Very welcoming staff - polite, courteous & attentive. Food really excellent. We always enjoy our time at the National Gallery cafe on Trafalgar Square. It’s so convenient to get to from Rochester,Kent.

Packed full of seasonal flavours, The National Café offers casual luxury with dishes such as Portland crab with avocado and pink grapefruit to start and indulgent salt caramel profiteroles, chocolate sauce, crème fraiche to finish.

My lst choice, in fact, had been the restaurant over the National Portrait Gallery - I love its view over Trafalgar Square, but it is closed on Tuesdays. It was something of a special occasion as it was my god-daughter's 30th birthday and I was taking her and her mother to Fiddler on the roof to celebrate and we wanted to have a quick bite to eat beforehand. I had never been to the National Cafe before, but now I will recommend it: we were given a special table for 3 with a pink rose on it. We had a light, salad-based supper (just the ticket!), with 3 glasses of wine. The service was impeccable. It was on the expensive side, but worth it!

Your staff rescued what would have been an awkward situation for our guests and for us. I had an email confirming my 3 pm booking for "Lunch", but on arrival was told that only Brunch was available after 2 pm. Your manager & the kitchen staff kindly adjusted the menus for us, which was very good of them.
But the email was distinctly misleading

Our first visit to the Café - we have always eaten in the Dining Room before. We had the Sorolla special menu, and loved it. We will be back!

The afternoon tea wasn't very nice - everything very generic and dry. When it became busy we were essentially abandoned by our waiter - we did feel sorry for him because it was just him manning the entire restaurant floor, and on a Saturday afternoon surely you would put more staff on shift? As experience and service go I have to give it a 2-star. Also, it should not cost this much; there are many places in London that we could have got a tastier and more interesting afternoon tea for less money and sadly I won't be repeating this experience.

    Food and service excellent.
Only problem was that booked table was not available on arrival (on time) and we had to be accommodated elsewhere, which was a smaller table

Food and wine was great, though menu very limited (no steak?!). The new interior design is awful. Feels like you arrived in an NHS operating room!
