A truly captivating restaurant in an atmospheric 18th-century building with grand gothic styling, stained glass windows and intimate lighting, The Mission in Plymouth offers superb tastes of the British Isles, along with inventive cocktails from the bar.

Premium seasonal produce from the local region and the UK is used throughout the Mission menu, starting with fresh seafood recipes like grilled Devon mackerel with toasted ciabatta, garlic, and lemon and sorrel dressing. From the grill, there is juicy Devon rack of lamb with chargrilled mint polenta, salsa verde and red wine jus, and a selection of steaks. There are gourmet takes on bar classics, such as beer battered cod and chips, and the burger with cajun slaw and chorizo, as well as vegetarian specials like pan-fried gnocchi with sugar snap peas and garlic.

The wine cellar at The Mission Plymouth boasts bottles from around the globe, while the cocktail list includes colourful classics along with some unique twists. On the dessert menu, diners can indulge in options like bitter chocolate and whiskey cake, maple and walnut ice cream and honeycomb.

Also offering a shady al fresco area to enjoy drinks, The Mission is filled with atmosphere, and makes a wonderfully romantic evening spot. Plymouth Rail Station is a 15-minute walk away.

What a find! We booked online after reading great reviews and we were not disappointed. Wonderful, friendly waitress and the food was classic but modern. The slow roasted pork belly was cooked to perfection, as was the wife's mackerel. Excellent value for money- 2 courses each and a bottle of wine for 64 pounds. We will definitely return the next time we are in Plymouth.

My first visit here. Great food well prepared and presented, very friendly and helpful staff, in a very relaxed atmosphere in very relaxed surroundings. The rump steak was cooked exactly as I requested, and a lovely creamy cheesecake topped the meal off perfectly.
