A cosy country-style cottage in the heart of Birmingham, The Karczma offers Polish cuisine made to centuries-old recipes. A glowing review from much-feared critic Jay Rayner champions the Karczma as ‘so good’.

Serving a wholly traditional selection, The Karczma menu spans from stuffed dumplings, warming soups and sizzling grilled kebabs, to classic stews and fresh fish. Favourites at The Karczma in Birmingham include beer-roasted ham hock with fried potatoes and sauerkraut, or sticky spare ribs with crisp salad.A host of favourite eastern European recipes for dessert includes traditional Polish apple cake, pavlova, or chocolate truffon.

A straw-covered ceiling, hefty communal tables and countless animal hides fill the homely dining room at Karczma. Head to the lively bar for a host of chilled beers served in chunky glass tankards.

Boasting 2 dining rooms and a rustic bar lined with fur-topped stools, The Karczma restaurant is a 5-minute walk from Birmingham Moor Street Rail Station and the Bull Ring Shopping Centre.

Went here for our wedding anniversary. It was very quiet, being a Tuesday evening. The setting is lovely. A quirky 'cottage' interier, with wooden plank tables , benches and chairs, with sheepskin rungs draped over, and some very interesting niknaks on display. The tables were dressed with some very pretty crochet runners. The waitress was very friendly and helpful. Food was FAB! And VERY generous portions. Hubby was less keen on his, but that's down to personal taste, rather than the quality of the food, which was excellent. I can only eat small amounts so they kindly provided containers so that I could bring the rest home. I'm looking forward to that later. I had the beef stew in potato pancake. Wow - it was good!! Nothing like english potato pancakes - this was light and fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. The stew was full, FULL of beef. Thick. and very tasty indeed. It was served with grated carrot and apple, pickled gerkins, and home made vinegrette slaw. The location is a little strange - being in a tattier part of the city, just behind Moor Street Station - but in the same building as the Polish Community Centre. There are lots of lovely dishes to choose from - next time I'd like to try the soup in a bread bowl. I have only two criticisms, really. 1. It is a little more expensive than our usual haunts, though well worth the extra. 2. We paid by card. We wanted to add a gratuity for the lovely waitress, but that isn't an option for card payments, and we didn't have any cash on us to give her. It would have been nice to have been able to add a little as a thank you for excellent service.

Food was amazing, the pierogis were massive and so tasty, the portion sizes were extremely generous and the beef main courses were absolutely delicious.

I was given a groupon for breakfast at the Karczma so maybe this was why we didn't get the best experience. Shown to our seats and only words uttered to us was "tea and coffee are not included and what toast do you want" after that tea and breakfast was given without a word and we didn't see a single soul afterwards. No choice on if we wanted a vegetarian option or something left off either. The restaurant itself is lovely and quirky, the benches you sit on can be rather uncomfortable but there are a few cushions and the furs all over the place add to the quirkiness. On inspection of the menu for an evening meal it looks rather expensive but where else can you sit on a wooden bench with fairy lights and furs? Groupon customers please be aware - they do not seem to like you!
