Restaurant description

Dating back roughly 200 years to when it was a charming coaching inn, The Hillside Inn stands as a country pub haven near Crawley, offering well-loved British pub cuisine. Sporting classic features of a Victorian inn, the exterior is eye-catching red brickwork, and the interior has chunky rustic beams and a warming hearth for winter dining. Also featured is a pretty patio with seating for al fresco dining in summer.

Hearty Sunday roasts and trusty British dishes head The Hillside Inn menu, and a range just for kids offers mini versions of pub favourites. Signature Vintage pies offer fillings like beef & merlot with buttered peas, while The Hillside Inn ‘Vintage classics’ menu includes lemon & garlic-roasted chicken with seasoned chips.

Paying homage to the Great British pub, the Vintage Inn bar stock includes cask-conditioned beers, real ales and a meticulously compiled wine list. Thirst-quenching offerings include seasonal non-alcoholic cocktails and freshly-pressed juices, and rich coffee is brewed freshly throughout the day.

The Hillside Inn is just 15 minutes’ walk from Three Bridges Train Station, or 7 minutes’ drive from central Crawley.

We arrived at the pre-booked time, 8.30pm; the table was not quite ready, but we didn't have to wait long. We were shown to our table and told that a waitress would be with us shortly, but there was no information about where the toilets were, how we should use them or protocol regarding masks, etc. Menus were on the table, and we were told by the manager that the gammon steak was not available, nor was the pie nor were there any chunky chips. The waitress arrived and asked if we wanted drinks; we decided to have a bottle of wine, but instead of giving us a wine list, she recited those wines on offer. We chose a cabernet sauvignon, but there was no info regarding price or country of origin. We then ordered, only to be told that in addition to the items already not available, there were no steaks left! I ended up with a burger, rather dry and served on a white plate with skinny fries ( I was really looking forward to chunky chips) - not very appealing, some colour/garnish would have been good. Also, the promised onion rings were missing, soon rectified however. My wife's fish pie appeared ok, but one or two of the prawns were very tough/not fully defrosted?? The cheesy potato topping was delicious though. Although we heard a bell sometime around 9.15/30, no-one explained what this meant, so when, at 9.35 our plates were cleared and we asked for some coffee, we were told that last orders had been called and therefore we could have no coffee........we were fully aware that we had to leave by 10.00, but were disappointed that no-one bothered to explain when last orders was. Altogether a disappointing experience.........

Lovely setting. Great waitress. Steak and Ale Pie disappointing as meat was fatty and had grisly.

Food was good but the taking of our orders was decidedly slow, especially as The Hillside was not busy.

Not much on offer! No calamari, fish & chips, lemon meringue or to my surprise even cheese & biscuits! Visiting The Hillside was like visiting Old Mother Hubbard's cupboard! My friend had the steak & found it rather chewy.
