The family-friendly Highdown Hotel in the seaside village of Goring has a traditional feel, from the historic architecture to the homely bar and the charming garden tea rooms. The carvery restaurant has a more mellow, contemporary ambience, with yellow walls, solid wooden tables and tub chairs to relax into after savouring the robust meaty dishes on the menu. Children will enjoy the indoor play area.

First time diner here, too mum for her 80th birthday meal based on recommendation. Whilst the decor and the food were good, the service left alot to be desired. Upon arriving and waiting at the door to be served, 4 members of staff 10 feet away, and fully aware we were waiting continued to have a giggle amongst themselves for 30 - 40 seconds. We were not given any information about how the service worked, i.e. take vouchers up to carvery, or that no starters were available. I had to ask. Upon going to counter to get food, no one was on the carvery. Waited for 2 - 3 minutes. Chef could be seen through window in door more interested in chatting up another female member of staff. Another waitress had to go into the kitchen to get chef to come out to serve us. Overall, I was not impressed with the staff who I felt were of the mindset that as it was a quiet night they really couldnt be bothered to serve those who were in the restaurant. Unfortunately, this would put me off revisiting, despite the good food and decor.
