Restaurant description

With panoramic views over the Firth of Forth which inspired Robert Louis Stevenson, The Hawes Inn near Edinburgh serves an accomplished menu of trusted British dishes. In an eye-catching white exterior framed with black windows and doors, The Hawes Inn is furnished with modern wood and rustic stone floors. You can dine by the cosy log-fire or with beautiful sea-views from the al fresco beer garden.

Hearty Sunday roasts and trusty British dishes head The Hawes Inn menu, and a range just for kids offers mini versions of pub favourites. Signature Vintage pies offer fillings like beef & merlot with buttered peas, while The Hawes Inn ‘Vintage classics’ menu includes lemon & garlic-roasted chicken with seasoned chips.

Paying homage to the Great British pub, the Vintage Inn bar stock includes cask-conditioned beers, real ales and a meticulously compiled wine list. Thirst-quenching offerings include seasonal non-alcoholic cocktails and freshly-pressed juices, and rich coffee is brewed freshly throughout the day.

The Hawes Inn South Queensferry is a 13-minute walk from Dalmeny Train Station, or an 18-minute drive into central Edinburgh.

We were met by a member of staff and the covid-19 risk management approach explained including exiting and access to toilet etc. and then shown to pleasant table with lots of space between us and other diners. Ordering from pleasant waiting staff was nice and preferable to using e-menus and/or QR readers. Drinks were brought promptly and well served. The menu was reasonably standard for inns with some but limited vegetarian options but what we had was well presented, well cooked and very tasty. The chips in particular were excellent! The offer of a mini dessert and hot drink is a nice touch rather than a full dessert at lunchtime. Staff were very pleasant and helpful and pricing was reasonable. The one criticism is that there appeared to be a fixed price menu on from the website but we were not offered that option so be prepared to ask for it if you want it! Other than that it was a very good experience.

We had a great meal here on New Year's Day - it was so easy to book online. The staff were friendly and attentive. There was a great choice of food and it was all very much enjoyed by everyone. Although they were very busy, we had no issues with waiting for our meals. It's a great setting for a family meal - cosy but spacious. Although I now live in Australia, with family here in Scotland, I'll definitely be back on a future visit.

Love your restaurant as we have been here on a few occasions but, the parking facilities needs to be reviewed. My party of 4 had to park quite far away as we couldn`t get near the restaurant for the volume of traffic and tourist coaches. We had pre-booked our table.

There were 11 family members, we were celebrating my husband’s 80th birthday. The Hawes held some memories for us as we used to visit when we were young. It has a lovely atmosphere.

We have been having Sunday lunches here off and on for 2 1/2. years and two things keep us coming back........The staff are very friendly and attentive without being in your face as they often are in other establishments. We also find the food consistently good with hearty portions. In a survey I did for our local restaurant I suggested to them that they should visit The Hawes Inn to see how it should be done. Keep up the good work.

As always,we had a great day out here.We have been many times and its always superb. We were all very surprised this time though,as the place was absolutely jam packed (lucky we booked in advance),but the food arrived within minutes and was top class as usual. The service here is always impeccable, pleasant and attentive, the prices are very reasonable considering the quality and size of portions,(I have paid more for a takeaway pizza in some places than a 2 course dinner here)

Staff very friendly and helpful. Sorry to see that regional dishes (e.g. those containing haggis) have been removed from the menu. Regional variation in menu is one of the joys of dining out. The beef I had was very tough.
