From Marcus Wareing, Gilbert Scott London showcases fine British produce in the illustrious surrounds of the 19th-century St Pancras Renaissance Hotel. The venue houses a spectacular grand dining room as well as an intimate cocktail bar.

Packed with rich British and European dishes, the Gilbert Scott menu begins with starters such as Dorset crab with smoked almond and pink grapefruit, and pigeon with prune and pistachio terrine. Follow this with Cornish brill with scallop and crab ravioli, Yorkshire lamb with salsa verde, or mushroom Wellington with kale and mushroom velouté. From the grill, sample the 25-day dry-aged Chateaubriand with grilled bone marrow and chips.

The Gilbert Scott bar serves up creative drinks in show-stopping, 19th-century surroundings.     I love the building that this restaurant sits in - it has fabulously high ceilings and the decor is so appealing, in the restaurant and immediate surroundings. The service from the staff was almost perfect and it was a wonderful day - my Mum's birthday. I had requested a nice table and we had a beautifully curved banquette that fit our group perfectly. The food was very good but I expected more as the restaurant is owned by a celebrated chef and so my expectations were met on the day but no dish was memorable, however, this did not matter as everything else was perfect - the company, the setting, the occasion - which they remembered and brought a mini birthday cake with a candle so we got the chance to sing badly once again...

    Easy booking and very accommodating the Gilbert Scott restaurant was just wonderful and would return again and again. Food was absolutely superb, beautifully cooked and served to perfection. We were so impressed with our choices of food that we shared with each other our dishes.
    The staff were delightful, helpful, and cannot recommend more highly. A completely wonderful experience on a very special occasions. My daughter didn’t want to leave Thank you for making this occasion so very special!

    Over 30 mins elapsed before our order was taken; I had to snare a passing waiter before anything happened. The delivery of each of the 3 courses was also slow. My Hanger Steak was expensive yet uninspiring and seemed poor value for money: a small piece of leathery, second grade beef with no redeeming features and little else on the plate to lift it from obscurity. Where was the Wow Factor?

    I booked a table to celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary on Thursday 26th October at 6.15 pm. The evening was enjoyable and the food good but I would like to mention three issues that had a negative impact on experience and would make us think twice before booking again.
    Immediately on being seated, the waiter asked if sparkling water was acceptable and as we were chatting, we agreed apart from my daughter who asked for still. Continually throughout our meal, a waiter topped up our water glasses even if we had drunk very little, to the point where it became obtrusive and slightly annoying. On seeing the bill, we were not surprised to see a charge for two bottles of sparkling water at a cost of £4 per unit. Secondly, we listened to the Maitre D’s advice regarding wine and as only three of us wanted wine we ordered a half carafe. He suggested the full carafe and even after we confirmed the half, he told us this would not be enough despite our saying we only wanted a small glass each. When the wine arrived, he suggested immediately that we ‘needed’ another carafe which he would bring. We had to reiterate very firmly that if we wanted more, we would ask. The half carafe was around £40.Thirdly, when ordering our food, the waiter asked what sides we required. We chose three sides between four but on requesting these he asked if we were sure and had we realised we had ‘only’ ordered three. Even when we confirmed our choices he asked again if we were sure and we had to state very firmly that we were happy with our choices.
    To conclude, we felt that deliberate ‘up-selling’ was present throughout our meal which was very disappointing. The £32 menu obviously brings in customers but we felt the aim was to increase our spend as much as possible. It could be argued there is a fine line between being solicitous and attentive and crossing over into being ‘pushy’ and aggressive. Our experience leads us to believe that this line was crossed.     The restaurant location is very central and grand location. Service was slow and had to remind about starters. Staff are professional although a bit stiff. Food is extremely mediocre and wine is way over priced.
