Good food. Service a bit slow but it was busy as it’s popular especially on Sunday.

Amidst the beautiful Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh, The Gateway Restaurant is a unique eatery in the impressive John Hope Gateway building. Boasting stunning al fresco dining, Scottish touches can be found throughout The Gateway’s breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea menus.

Natural light streams into The Gateway Restaurant, with tall windows, a unique panelled ceiling and clean wooden styling. It’s a convivial spot to start the day with a full Scottish breakfast, espresso and pastries, or even a stack of Scotch pancakes.

At lunchtime, try Scottish steak burgers or lamb koftas, or Grampian chicken escalope. Elsewhere on the Gateway Restaurant menu, tempting sharing platters offer a choice of seafood, vegetarian or continental fare, while desserts of dark chocolate trifle and coconut and saffron semolina are delicious and different.

Garden cream teas can be taken with a glass of champagne, or one of a range of delicate infusions, with an array of tempting cakes and scones to enjoy until sunset. The Gateway Restaurant in Edinburgh is a 6-minute drive from Waverley Train Station.

David was a great waiter at the botanics gateway restaurant but the breakfast was too greasy , grilled version please !

Most enjoyable lunch, very relaxed atmosphere and the service was very good. Our waiter was charming and attentive. Had the pleasure of a lovely walk around the gardens before lunch to work up an appetite.

Disappointing light lunch menu. Not as good as it used to be. My Botanics super salad was very poorly presented and rather stodgy. ..Chicken pie should have flaky or puff pastry not short crust. I am told the soup was good. The redeeming feature was our waitress |Claire who was very helpful, patient and pleasant.

I dine quite frequently here as I am a Friend of the Botanics. On this occasion the chips were hard and had to be replaced with more chips which themselves were not ideal. Presumably they come out of a packet and all that the kitchen staff have to do is cook them. Disappointing.

Get together with 3 friends. We chose the pulled pork as our main - very tasty ditto the chips.

We sat outside as the sun was shining. Delightful. The waitress was efficient, charming and entertaining and added considerably to the experience. The coffee is never by any means the best in Edinburgh but it is okay and the large croissant not, I thought, quite as nice as the pair of little ones you use to provide but fine nevertheless. I feel I know the floor manageress such is the frequency of my visits and I appreciate the pleasant way in which she meets greets and says goodbye. Very good a her job.
