Tucked away in the historical village of Chorleywood, right beside the local cricket club ground, The Gate offers al fresco dining in its peaceful beer garden, as well as a cosy bar and restaurant. This refurbished gastro pub serves a selection of modern British dishes.
With chefs given the opportunity to train at cookery schools in Spain and Italy, The Gate menu features modern signature recipes made using the finest seasonal ingredients. As well as creative daily-changing specials, favourites include Mediterranean mezze, seared chicken breast with sweet potato rosti & buttered British beans, and spit-roasted chicken with lemon & garlic confit. A kids’ menu and Sunday roasts also feature, and desserts include rich vanilla and chocolate gelato with home-baked cookies.
The result of a treasured partnership with Rothschild wine merchants, the cellar at The Gate restaurant showcases many fine wines, while token real ales and premium spirits are found at the bar. Nostalgic British nibbles and eclectic sharing platters bursting with international flavours offer more laidback dining.

I love visiting the gate and have done so for many years. I was very disappointed during this visit to find that the restaurant was understaffed. The staff that were there were training or exceedingly busy. Sitting outside our table as well as many others spent a long time waiting for someone to take in order even though we were told it would be taken outside. The staff didn’t clear table, they weren’t wiped and even though we sat at a table with dirty plates they still weren’t cleared. The food was good but the experience certainly wasn’t as good as I have had in the past and it has made me think whether I would Visit again.

Thoroughly enjoyed my visit. Busy restaurant and food, wine, service and staff all excellent. Long may it continue.

We hadn't been to the Gate for a while due to bad dining experiences but was pleasantly surprised to find that the food was great and the staff so much pleasanter making us feel like valued customers. Well done. We will return.

Staff were friendly, service pretty good. Atmosphere is OK, insufficient acoustic dampening so quite echoey. Beer was good. Food was average. Belly pork didn't seem to be belly pork, more like dried out oork steak with a thin strip of crackling. Looks pre-made and reheated on premises. Typical pub grub I suppose, shouldn't expect much!

We had a good evening and everybody enjoyed their meal. The waiter, although very pleasant and willing, was very inexperienced and I felt he needed more training. On arrival he was sorting out some cutlery and left a drawer of cutlery on the floor to show us to our table which was a hazard I had to point out to an elderly relative to avoid. I felt this should have been put away first. What was nice was that after I had paid the bill we chatted a long time afterwards and no one hassled us to leave. We will certainly come again! As the evening progressed it did become very noisy and I found it difficult to hear other members of my party. One criticism of the food was that my accompanying salad looked some tired with limp pea shoots. A salad should always look fresh.
