Old fashioned yes, but it's in the Grand Hotel in Eastbourne. You know it will be old world. The food has improved in recent years - and the prices aren't as scary as they once seemed. Good for a family lunch across the generations. We tend to visit once a year or so - and it's a great location for that - and the hotel has superb facilities....

Being a vegetarian I was not impressed by the dish on the menu, I can't remember what it was but I do remember aubergines being part of it. It is about time that chefs
thought about the meal they are offering vegetarians, there are not many of us that like aubergines! I ended up with the fish and chips, the fish was ok but the chips would have done for the whole table, there were far too many. That said my husband and his stepmother both had duck confit that came with salad, my husband said that it was about time chefs did salad as with the weather that we are having at present that is all that the majority of people want. I couldn't decide between the cherry creme brulee or the passion fruit tart, going with the passion fruit tart. The tart was just like a creme brulee and the passion fruit was just spread on the plate, so very disappointing.

It's much more expensive than restaurants that we would normally use, but we were there for our wedding anniversary and it lived up to our expectations.

The position of the Grand Hotel is great, just across from the beach and looking very enticing. The Garden Restaurant unfortunately has no views at all, the large windows to one side of the room are on to a wide corridor. This feeling of enclosure gives the very large room a slightly gloomy atmosphere. There seemed to be far too many staff for the number of diners eating on the Sunday lunchtime we visited so that we felt it hard to relax. If our table wasn't being visited by the bread server, the water server, the chef, the sommelier, the bar person or the restaurant manager then the next table was. The food needed to be wonderful to entice us to ever visit again, but it was average at best. The set menu is very limited so we chose from the a la carte and vegetarian menus. Nothing was awful but nothing was great either. The best thing about the restaurant was that they had an excellent pianist.

My wife and I took our daughter for her birthday lunch. The service was very good, as was the food. The Garden Room was magnificent.

Had a lovely meal on 26 May. There was plenty of choice on the menu and the food was beautifully cooked and presented. The staff were very polite and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble.

Wonderful setting and excellent service but let down a little by limited menu. Could do with twice as many starters and main courses then it would definitely be the best dining experience in the area.

Excellent service from arrival to leaving. We had the three course lunch which was very good value and quality. Large jug of iced water made available without asking and a comprehensive reasonably priced wine list. The Saumer was lovely. The lamb confit and sea bream were excellent as were all of the desserts. Nice ambiance reminiscent of the Ritz. All in all a nice treat for my elderly mother

Great food, friendly staff. We think food has gone up a notch over the last few months(but it was always good before!)
