Superb food. Enjoyed the Vegetable Wellington so much I had it two nights running when staying at the Winchester Royal Hotel!

A tranquil conservatory-style eatery looking out over beautiful grounds, The Garden Restaurant at The Winchester Royal Hotel is a charming escape at this 16th-century hotel. Imaginative British fare is complemented by an extensive wine list and local beers, while the classic afternoon teas can be enjoyed in the gardens, weather permitting.

Modern takes on wholesome British recipes are beautifully presented on The Garden Restaurant menu. The freshest seasonal ingredients are used throughout, as seen in starters like confit rabbit terrine with plum and rhubarb purée, and hearty mains including oven-roasted lamb rump with chunky vegetable and butterbean ragoût, spring onion mash and redcurrant jus. Delicacies for vegetarians include exotic mushrooms with garlic and parsley cream in a puff pastry case, while from the grill there are succulent cuts of steak, and a signature burger. There is also a dedicated children's menu.

Afternoon teas at The Garden Restaurant at The Winchester Royal Hotel hold true to celebrated British traditions, offering soft finger sandwiches with a range of fillings, as well as scones with jam and clotted cream, exotic loose leaf teas, and glasses of prosecco for an indulgent treat.

A stunning example of British tradition mixed with innovative luxury, The Garden Restaurant is just round the corner from the stunning Winchester Cathedral, and only 8 minutes' walk from Winchester Rail Station.

Been here loads before, but this time was a totally different experience. If I was being generous I would say they were short of staff, but there were no explanations or apologies despite our drinks taking 40 mins to arrive and our food an hour. Total time sitting in the restaurant (for just 2 courses) was over 3 hours. Whilst the staff wre lovely, the time taken was outrageous, the coffee cold and poor quality, as was the vegetarian main. For £130 for 6 (6 mains and only 2 puddings) it was a very disappointing experience, especially as we had all travelled a fair distance to eat there. Sadly we are unlikely to return

The food was OK, it tasted nice but the Caramel source tasted like toffee source with the sticky toffee pudding. The restaurant was quiet but we were well looked after.

The setting was light and airy. We had a nice big table with plenty of room - even enough for my friend with a broken leg to rest it on a spare chair. The food was tasty and reasonably priced, and we were served quickly. I’d recommend Sunday lunch there to anyone.

Only one main meal (fish) which was pretty good although served dry - maybe a little butter would have been a good idea, though the caper sauce was nice, and decent veg. also. Desert selection limited, as is often the case nowadays, but pleasant enough overall. Service was excellent, mainly with Natasha, bright and efficient.

Excellent value for money and service at lunchtime. The set menu is limited in terms of choices but between the 5 of us we had all the starters, all the mains and all the desserts. They were all very good. We were the only diners so the ambience was very quiet, but very pleasant setting and view of the garden.

I was very disappointed as it was the first outing for my mum who has recently been diagnosed with dementia. The coffee was not hot but the tea was good I'm told by others. The tea overall looked sad and the scones were stale. I had to ask for more cream as there were four of us and only enough for two. It did not meet the description. I didn't complain as I've said I wanted it to be nice for my mum.

Food and service was excellent. Shame there was a number of items not available from the menu

Three meat dishes unavailable; there was no Pinot Grigio ordered by adjacent diners. Service poor - serving staff were very polite but there wasn't enough staff to service the restaurant - there was a function on so we guessed staff had been deployed to that. We waited and waited and on hearing two other tables complain of poor quality food we decided to cancel our order and leave. Also, there was a radio station playing in the restaurant, complete with traffic and weather reports - not what one wants when dining. We asked for it to be turned down or off but it wasn't.
