Inspired by the coastal eateries of California, The Gallivant is perched right beside the Camber Sands dunes. This laid-back, relaxing setting has al fresco seating to enjoy the sea air look and out across the beach, and showcases a great variety of modern British dishes.

Set in an area rich in local produce, The Gallivant menu tries to source every ingredient from within a 10 mile radius. There are tastes of the seafront with dishes like smoked haddock with Rye bay cockles, spring onion and cured mayo, and classic favourites such as saddleback pork chop with creamed Morghew potato and smashed swede. On Sundays, there are generous roasts with fresh Bloody Marys.

Delectable desserts at The Gallivant in Rye come beautifully presented, with treats like buttermilk panna cotta with rhubarb sorbet and granola. The wine list features over 130 bottles, including carefully selected English vintages.

A beautiful coastal treat that holds a charming holiday feel, The Gallivant is just an 8-minute drive from Rye Rail Station.

Overall we had a positive experience but for the expense there should be more attention to detail- these are small concerns individually but together can be irritating to the whole experience and equally they are concerns that can so easily be sorted.
    1. On arrival it was quiet , certainly not busy bar a pre wedding party of about 10. We were not greeted but left to wander around ourselves with no direction of where to go and whether we would like a pre drink or not , eventually we were taken to our table.Positively the waitress suggested if we wanted to get going before the wedding party chose their food then she was happy to take out order first - there was 3 of us.
    2. The wine I chose was not available but this was not communicated to me until I recognised the incorrect year - when I questioned this , I was told that it had not been available for a couple of weeks and I suggested they change the menu to reflect the date they did have - easy to do !!
    3. The meal came with vegetables and we ordered seasonal veg as a side dish- we were not told that this was the same as what came with the meal, so we had too much of the same- this could have been explained then we could have selected better.
4.after our meal we went for a nightcap and sat by the lovely wood burner , however it was nearly out and when we asked if a couple of fire lighters could get it going again they said no firefighters - clearly the impression was they couldn’t be bothered, so we didn’t buy a night cap, just waited disappointingly for the taxi .Bit of a negative end to my birthday treat ??

This restaurant could be nice... but we found our visit a little disappointing. The bar area as you come into The Gallivant is lovely, the restaurant itself is more like a cafe. The food is good quality, but the prices are high for the quantity of food you get. We were there for lunch...a small lemonade and homemade cordial was £6, and the soup portion was very small for £7 (equivalent to a small jug of cream), which barely touched the sides, bread ordered to help fill us up cost £8. The roast my friend had was £20 and although nice, was the same size as the kids portion we'd had at a lovely gastro pub the week before (which was £7). Service charge was £11, which we decided not to pay not only because of poor value but because we understood the service didn't all go to the staff.

This is a super place to chill by the sea. Camber has an amazing beach and dunes and The Gallivant is a minute away. There’s a well thought out, London standard lounge and nice, restaurant with upcycled furniture. I’ve been before when all was about perfect. Sadly this time it was not. The service was not great. They were trying hard but they were training people up and it was a bit slow but friendly. The food was not so good. The main course arrived in two parts our and our guests with a few minutes gap in between. It was warm not hot and the two fillets of sole we had were very poor. Small, over cooked, barely warm and as expensive as I pay in Mayfair for the best I’ve eaten. In any other circumstance I would have returned them. However, that said, we will try it again as I like the place and they were trying hard. My suggestion would be a much simpler menu of well produced ‘standards’.

Staff were very friendly and welcoming. Loved the decor and overall ambience. Our food was very good and we enjoyed our evening in the restaurant.

It was a lovely dining experience and the ambience is great. The food was good but we all felt the food wasn’t the type of meal you want at lunch time and although delicious there were no salads or modern lunch type choices. The menu was more dinner options. We all really enjoyed everything but would only come back for Sunday lunch or dinner.

The staff at the Gallivant were charming and efficient. As we shared all the dishes we ordered they brought us extra plates to eat off.
The cod was fresh and meaty and served on tasty gathered vegetables. The mallard was gamey and the sauce delicious and enjoyed the creamy mashed potatoes it came with.
The raspberry torte had lemony sponge and lovely vanilla ice cream.
We don't drink alcohol at lunchtime but I love freee sparkling water.
    Relaxed surroundings and flavoursome food.

fantastic. We have visited this restaurant since it opened as The Place - it deteriorated and we visited less often. Then changed to Gallivants and we visited occasionally and the standard came back. This time all décor has changed and everything , particularly the food and atmosphere was right back and plus as to when it first opened. We have also stayed and now visiting again we will certainly be back and stay overnight.. Pleased to see swimsuits still on display - so interesting. loved it!!!

The food was fantastic. Usually the service is good and our waitress was great but there was no one to greet us. We arrived and sat down for about 10 mins and in the end went to the bar to ask for drinks. Given that the restaurant has now been refurbished and the food is excellent you need someone at the helm front of house. Also we have been to your restaurant a number of times and no one recognises us. It’s a shame because we love the restaurant and food. But we’re disappointed with the way the front of house is managed.
