Nestled in the beautiful South Downs, The Friar’s Oak in Hassocks offers traditional British pub food with spectacular views. The appealing rustic appearance of the brickwork, oak beams and warming hearth-fire is only matched by the views from the al fresco beer garden, great for summer.
Hearty Sunday roasts and trusty British dishes head The Friar’s Oak menu, and a range just for kids offers mini versions of pub favourites. Signature Vintage pies offer fillings like beef & merlot with buttered peas, while The Friar’s Oak ‘Vintage classics’ menu includes lemon & garlic-roasted chicken with seasoned chips.
Paying homage to the Great British pub, the Vintage Inn bar stock includes cask-conditioned beers, real ales and a meticulously compiled wine list. Thirst-quenching offerings include seasonal non-alcoholic cocktails and freshly-pressed juices, and rich coffee is brewed freshly throughout the day.
The Friar’s Oak is only 9 minutes’ drive from Hassocks Train Station, or 13 minutes from central Brighton.

Very nice meal. Unfortunately by 2.30 they'd run out of the apple pie and custard. Considering this was such a popular dish for a Sunday, would have thought they'd have taken account of this and had more on hand

Food was good, service not so much. We didn't get asked if we wanted desserts or coffees, so we just left!

The service was rather slow, however the Manager did apologise. Four staff members had phoned in sick, so it was understanable. Having said this, the food was fine and very enjoyable.

The meal was very good, but disappointed the 'roasts and Eton mess' were off the menu, especially on a Sunday evening. The Friars Oak is our local and we enjoy the atmosphere there. We would certainly return.

Decided to eat in garden as such a lovely day. All had mains only. These were fish & chips (huge and delicious). Salmon and salad - excellent. Turkey roast - huge portion and lots of gravy. Roast lamb - lamb a little tough but lovely fresh vegetables and lots of gravy. Good atmosphere. Excellent service and good choice of beer. The menu was rather a muddle but managed to sort out in the end. Probably a rare glitch as they were short staffed. Plenty of choice. Could have done with some cushions on the seating but we moved from wicker sofas to wooden chairs which were more comfortable and we could reach the table! Food was good value for money and we would certainly eat there again and recommend to our friends ( already have). I can be very critical of restaurants so this is high praise. Thank you Friars Oak.

We were very happy with the friendly, courteous service of our waitress, Alison, and the food was very
good....... in particular the roast duck leg. There is a lovely ambience/atmosphere and it is clean and
well-decorated with an interesting selection of dining rooms. The coffee was excellent (we did not have any alcoholic drinks ) .

I have eaten here many times, however this time my companions belly pork was overcooked which was a shame. Although we sat in an area not normally given table service, we were in fact treated to table service which was nice.

3 of us dined on 12/06. In general the experience was not good. Our waitress did her best but unlike previous meals here we had problems. 2 of our party ordered gammon , egg ,& chips these meals were OK. The other person ordered half BBQ chicken this arrived but not as described on the menu. Sweets were ordered but there was a very long delay so due to time we were obliged to leave without having this course.
It was clear that the waiting staff were under considerable pressure and although the restaurant was not full other people were dining outside and this seem to over stretch the staffing arrangements.
