This is a jewel of a hotel, and, still rare these days, privately owned. Warmly welcomed and seated in the lovely tea room, the staff there could not have been more solicitous. Huge selection of teas plus champagne if required. Only reservation was the sandwich fillings, savoury open buns and pastries which were less traditional and more European. The scones were delicious, as were the cream and jam. Warmly recommended unless, like me, you are of a certain age and expectation of very traditional cream tea.

We were disappointed that the pianist wasn’t playing Christmas Carols and Songs. I made the booking specifically for the festival afternoon tea under the impression that it would be more festive. Unfortunately the restaurant was busy, and were not waited on. I had to flag down the waiter for more hot water, no one offered us a second glass of champagne, or to refill the trays. I had been here before on a few occasions for regular high high and I was always very impressed. However I think they are prepared for the demands when they are busy. Very disappointing.
