    Second visit here and tailored this visit to the South West specifically so we could eat here and check out if it was as good as wel remembered....and it is! Food is exceptional, we had the 'Steak and Ale' and 'Fish and Prosecco' specials which are remarkably good value. It is however the scallop starters which stand out and will probably bring us back next time we are in this part of the country

    While we thought that the food was overall good the overall experience was spoilt by the service. The service staff were courteous and polite throughout but the number of mistakes and lack of attention for a restaurant charging at the higher end for their a la carte dishes was surprising. There was a huge gap between our starters being delivered and our main courses coming out with no explanation. Then my wife found a hair on her fish (fortunately before she began tucking in), there was no apology just a polite 'I will take that back for you'. When I asked for mine to be kept warm in the kitchen so we could eat at the same time the waitress seemed surprised. When the mains eventually came back out they were followed by our side dishes, and again there was an error as the green beans we had requested to come without any butter came smothered in it. Again there was no apology and by the time the side was re-delivered it was halfway through our mains.

    There were other niggles in terms of the service. There were no baby changing units just a change matt which we guessed you were supposed to balance on top of the toilet. I asked for a pint of shandy, the waitress took my order without mentioning they didn't have pint glasses and so what I got was a half pint of shandy with the remnants of a bottle of beer. My wife asked for a repeat of her first wine and was delivered a large glass despite her first glass being a small one. These may seem nit picky but given the cost I would expect better and more attentive service, especially when the service charge is automatically added to the bill.

    There was never an apology for being served a main course with a hair on it. Mistakes happen but we would have expected there to be an apology for such an error.

    Overall it was a shame as the food in general was very good, if a little overpriced. The duck main I had was particularly good.
