Love the booths, which I always ask to sit in. Staff polite and friendly. Love their half price steak night, great value, although 2 of our 4 orders for steak were overlooked, we didn't complain because they said they were quite tasty!

With rustic original features like exposed wooden beams and rustic brick walls, The Elephant at the Market serves up gourmet British recipes in laid-back comfort. The restaurant boasts both a Josper charcoal oven and wood-fired pizza oven, while the bar offers up signature cocktails and guest ales.

Premium aged steaks cooked in the Josper charcoal oven take pride of place on The Elephant in the Room menu, with cuts including a 20 oz chateaubriand to share. Wood-fired pizzas come topped with prosciutto ham, spicy chilli chicken and peppadew peppers, and a selection of other main courses include home-style favourites like Gloucester Old Spot sausages and mash, and ale battered fish and chips.

Sundays at The Elephant at the Market in Newbury are for generous roast dinners, with slow-cooked meats served with seasonal vegetables and all the trimmings. From the bar, local guest ales and international craft beers are on tap, along with a diverse wine selection and selection of signature cocktails.

A warm, inviting setting for gourmet British and European flavours, The Elephant at the Market is opposite the Kennet Shopping Centre, and 6 minutes' walk from Newbury Rail Station.

Nice atmosphere, friendly staff. Food mostly very good, generous portions. Sunday roast very good value with free starter or dessert on offer at the momeNT. "Slow-roasted " belly pork did not exactly fall apart as it should, but it was a nice piece of meat. Only one grumble, we were not told that certain items had run out when we were given the menus - we chose a dessert that was sold out..

Eat here as staying in their adjoining accommodation. Booked a table for 8pm on arriving at the hotel in the morning checked that they had the reservation for 3 adults and a child for the evening which they confirmed.
Arrived in the evening for drinks beforehand and again checked in reservation. It wasn't until after being seated at 8pm ordering starters and main course and half way through eating starter we were told as we had an under 18 year old with us we needed to be out the restaurant by 9pm. This was now 8.30pm so still had mains to eat and possibly a dessert.
We insisted in staying until are meal was finished as we were not aware of this policy when booking. This was after a lot of arguing with the so called managers and resulting in my daughter in tears.

Overall food was good but this was ruined by the poor attitude of the management and their running of the restaurant. Waitress remained pleasant throughout as she was clearly only doing as she was told.

Wouldn't recommend this hotel/restaurant if you have children with you.
