Restaurant description

The Dungeon Restaurant and The Orangery at Dalhousie Castle sit in a 13th-century fortress on the banks of the River Esk. The fine food from local produce has earned the venue 2 coveted AA Rosettes.

The Dungeon Restaurant menu offers gourmet Scottish and French dishes in the unique setting of the castle’s historic dungeons. The rich ingredients and exquisitely presented creations are befitting of the elaborate location, with dishes that include roast partridge with a purée soubise, served with creamed haricots blancs and pickled girolle mushrooms. Elsewhere on the menu, try loin of pork with crackling and apple and bramble compote, or the aromatic cod with pak choi, smoked mussels and lemongrass sauce. The Orangery offers a more informal alternative, with views of the river and surrounding woodland. The menu is a lighter selection of contemporary Scottish and European dishes, with the same commitment to quality, local ingredients.

Afternoon tea at Dalhousie Castle offers a traditional, sophisticated experience to match the unique setting. Alongside classic finger sandwiches, cakes, shortbread and scones, enjoy a glass of Champagne at one of Scotland’s most impressive dining spots.

Just 8 miles from Edinburgh city centre, Dalhousie Castle in Bonnyrigg is surrounded by idyllic countryside.

We had a very nice evening, and our food was delicious. Our dinner was made even better by the very friendly and attentive staff. Particular favourites were the goat‘s cheese starter and the ginger sponge dessert.

Food was very good and in a nice location. Limited choice for someone with dietary restrictions. However, staff were excellent and the glass of prosecco for a special occasion was a lovely touch.

Great atmosphere, quiet and comfortable. Servings were quick and efficient. Nice to do the waiting and ordering in the library in advance of being lead to the table in the dungeon. Love the halibut and the cauliflower soup! Could have excelled more on deserts, though. Would love to experience it again!

The food was outstanding. I would definitely rate it alongside our favourite Michelin Star restaurant in London. The service was brilliant. We went for our 3rd wedding anniversary and the little extra touches were very well received. Good value for money

Décoration médiévale du plus bel effet. Plats succulents.

Overall I would recommend trying The Dungeon for a romantic or special dinner, but as far as service goes, I am hoping we were just there on an off night. The decor in The Dungeon was fantastic, and the food was exceptional, but the slow service and the same background song playing on repeat took away from what could have been an amazing experience. Seriously, hearing that one song so much was like receiving torture in a dungeon. Dishes were beautifully presented. The leek canneloni was delicate yet flavorful. The lamb was cooked perfectly. Portions seemed adequate. Unfortunately, we had to track down our server to pay for our meal, and after waiting a while we were brought an incorrect bill. The restaurant wasn't even busy at that point, and the wait time seemed inexcusable.

The Orangery restaurant was lovely. Very spacious and airy. Very clean and a very comfortable place to relax for an evening meal. The staff were really friendly and attentive. The food was delicious and it came out nice and hot. The dessert (white choc brownie) was so tasty as well! The whole experience was just as it should be when you are looking to dine on holiday. Lovely atmosphere and we can't fault it at all! Next time we come back we are dying to try The Dungeon restaurant as it looks amazing!!

The castle is beautiful. The service was very good, but we were a bit lost on arrival, as no one greeted us or showed us where to go. We enjoyed sparkling wine with delicious canapes in the library. The parmesan "cookie" was excellent. We loved the tuna tartare and the lamb was perfectly cooked and tasty. The dessert of chocolate souffle with cherries was good as well. We were very well pleased with our evening and would return.
