Restaurant description

The Dungeon Restaurant and The Orangery at Dalhousie Castle sit in a 13th-century fortress on the banks of the River Esk. The fine food from local produce has earned the venue 2 coveted AA Rosettes.

The Dungeon Restaurant menu offers gourmet Scottish and French dishes in the unique setting of the castle’s historic dungeons. The rich ingredients and exquisitely presented creations are befitting of the elaborate location, with dishes that include roast partridge with a purée soubise, served with creamed haricots blancs and pickled girolle mushrooms. Elsewhere on the menu, try loin of pork with crackling and apple and bramble compote, or the aromatic cod with pak choi, smoked mussels and lemongrass sauce. The Orangery offers a more informal alternative, with views of the river and surrounding woodland. The menu is a lighter selection of contemporary Scottish and European dishes, with the same commitment to quality, local ingredients.

Afternoon tea at Dalhousie Castle offers a traditional, sophisticated experience to match the unique setting. Alongside classic finger sandwiches, cakes, shortbread and scones, enjoy a glass of Champagne at one of Scotland’s most impressive dining spots.

Just 8 miles from Edinburgh city centre, Dalhousie Castle in Bonnyrigg is surrounded by idyllic countryside.

Excellent food and service in The Dungeon Restaurant - a little to cold in the Orangery. We recommend some plants to make it more like an Orangery and an internet connection. The internet did not work at all.

The food was ambitious but missed the mark. The service was very poor. Our wine order was never taken. No one ever came to check on the table to see if we were satisfied or needed anything. Dessert was served with no offer for coffee or tea. I asked for a coffee and waited 10 minutes and had to just eat the dessert. No one ever came back to the table. This was our anniversary dinner and it was completely ruined by this poor service.

The dining area and food were without fault,my wife and I were there to celebrate 49 yrs married. Through no fault of the hotel the sun / heat through the windows was almost unbearable. My only concerns were the time taken to serve -a period of 45 mins from order taken to be served I feel is a bit long also our wine ordered was not served until I reminded the waiter when the food was served. Neither of which spoiled a wonderful lunch.

As a Ramsay descendant it was extra special to arrive at Dalhousie. Walking around outside taking in the castles splendor gave me the chills. It is beautiful. Inside we were greeted and immediately ushered to the library. The gentleman was charming, from his kilt and bagpipes, to his wonderful Ramsay stories. I earned a double handshake for being a Ramsay. The wall decor of Ramsay history was breathtaking. Once in the library, we ordered drinks and were treated to some tid bits that that were fabulous. I even drank the peas, and I’m not fond of peas. They were tasty. Once in the dungeon, we were seated and the waiter placed our napkins on our laps. The decor was awesome, armor, swords, and candlelight. Our starters of scallops were delicious and rich in flavor. My wife had chicken and I had grilled turbot. Both were wonderful. Dessert was strawberries and champagne. All I can say is that was the best dessert plate I’ve ever had, my description could never do it justice. Thank you for the wonderful experience. Mark Ramsay Sheriff

A bit disappointing really, I expected more. The meals were not that well presented, everything was slightly overcooked & overpriced. We cancelled the second meal & went to Edinburgh instead.
