Wrapped in Celtic mythology, The Dragonfly near Newport occupies supposedly enchanted, but undoubtedly beautiful, land. It boasts traditional British pub cuisine by the homely hearth-fire, or in the pretty beer garden which faces the peaceful Tredegar House Country Park.
Hearty Sunday roasts and trusty British dishes head The Dragonfly menu, and a range just for kids offers mini versions of pub favourites. Signature Vintage pies offer fillings like beef & merlot with buttered peas, while The Dragonfly ‘Vintage classics’ menu includes lemon & garlic-roasted chicken with seasoned chips.
Paying homage to the Great British pub, the Vintage Inn bar stock includes cask-conditioned beers, real ales and a meticulously compiled wine list. Thirst-quenching offerings include seasonal non-alcoholic cocktails and freshly-pressed juices, and rich coffee is brewed freshly throughout the day.
Though outside the city in the rustic countryside, The Dragonfly is only an 11-minute drive from Newport (South Wales) Train Station.

Customer reviews for The Dragonfly

The service was very slow, our table was booked at 6.30 and we had to ask where our starters were and then ask again where the mains were. The time for those two courses were over two hours! The waiter was very pleasant though.

Knew what to expect, dined here many times, staff always very friendly but 'pushed' probably because it was quite busy (Wednesday night - other restaurants would love to be busy on a Wednesday evening)

Excellent standard of food, although a long wait to receive it. Serving staff were attentive and did their best.

Welcoming service over a busy lunch period; clearly a popular restaurant. Bar left unattended on occasions, but frustrating when off duty staff chatting across the bar and not doing anything to help. Looked a bit unprofessional.
Roast dinner was lovely and we all enjoyed our meal.

The newly refurbished restaurant looks lovely, clean and fresh. Our table was booked for 16.30 which meant we selected from the lunch menu. Having eaten here before we were looking forward to the 'big whale of a fish' I.e haddock in batter. Sadly this is no longer on either the lunch nor the dinner menu. We opted instead for the burger in brioche bun which was a good substitution. It was quiet at the time we were there but service and staff were great. Hopefully our past bad experiences have disapoeared and this restaurant will return to the good ol' days when it first opened. A lovely evening in lovely surroundings.

The website advertised a good variety of gins and wine. We ordered the Rhubarb Gin and glass of Rioja - both they did not have! If you are going to make a point of advertising this then you need to make sure it is in stock. My guest settled for Hendricks which is normally served with Cucumber but this came with Lime which alters the taste of the gin. A bar person should know this. They don't do brown bread just white brioche which obviously is there prerogative but limits the choice somewhat. This newly refurbished restaurant was cosy with tasteful decor but the lights were out in our part of the restaurant - nothing was mentioned by the staff. The staff member lit candles but didn't explain why the lighting was out. Slightly disappointing but would go back in the hope that things improve.

Enjoyed our lunch here with friends. Booking was easy and we were able to get day and time we wanted. The venue was not overly busy for the time of year. Had choice of either normal menu or a Christmas menu. We all choose off the normal menu. Nice to see small "plates" available if required. Portions were generous and food was excellent. Nice to see as well as normal dessert menu and coffees that you could have a coffee and small dessert (same choices as main desserts) for a reduced price. Two of our party took this option and were very pleased with what was served. Overall an excellent choice of venue and excellent food and very pleasant service from the staff.
