A smokehouse that beckons diners in with its eclectic style and cosy ambience, The Dark Horse blends tastes of America and Britain together perfectly. Alongside the meat delicacies are a huge range of cask ales and craft beers from around the world, and there are frequent live music events which are big draws.
Mouthwatering slow-cooked meats are the speciality on the Dark Horse menu, with prime cuts of beef and pork expertly smoked using signature techniques. There are chicken wings in a choice of glazes, a selection of burgers with toppings like smoked ham hock and sweetcorn relish, and a range of hand-tossed pizzas are prepared in the wood-fired oven.
Classic desserts from the States at The Dark Horse in Birmingham include pancakes with pistachio ice cream, while the craft beer selection features bottles from across the globe, as well as local breweries. There are artisan spirits on offer too, including corn whiskey from Georgia, and Mezcal from south of the border.
With its hearty dishes and great range of live music acts, The Dark Horse is a thoroughly sociable eatery all through the week. University Rail Station is a 9-minute drive away.

Waiters are always friendly and welcoming food is constantly good whenever we visit ...music is good and events and just a good atmosphere overall. Stuffed peppers starter is lovely as well as the blue cheese and the winter salad. We miss the Brie burger from the fprevious menu though ;)

Overall it was poor. I had booked a table for 12 with two high chairs and was given a table just big enough for 8 adults at a push. We waited ages to have our order taken and then waited ages for our food which was average at best. One of our party didn’t even get his meal after all the waiting. I think it all came down to poor management as there wasn’t enough staff to deal with the numbers. I spoke with the manager who said they were taken by surprise with the number of walk ups however when I asked about the other reserved tables when we arrived and the fact that we were given such a small table, he had no reply! Credit must be given to the two girls who were run ragged. They did their absolute best in difficult circumstances. As said poor management really let us all down.

I absolutely love the food at the dark horse! I go there any time a friend is visiting me and they all love it too. The staff are super friendly, smiley and helpful. My favourite meals are the farmageddon pizza, Cuban sandwich and porky pig burger but to be fair I have enjoyed everything I've eaten there and I think I've tried everything by now. Would thoroughly recommend the dark horse to everyone who likes hearty meaty pub meals especially smoke house meats and proper stone naked Italian pizzas. The desserts are amazing too but I'm often so full I don't manage one as well because the portions are incredibly generous!
