Boasting an appealing pastoral design, The Cunning Man, near Reading, has a charming thatched roof, an oaken and cobbled brick interior and a warm hearth-fire. More, it is located next to the Kennet and Avon Canal, so the traditional British pub cuisine can be enjoyed with beautiful country views from the al fresco beer garden.

Hearty Sunday roasts and trusty British dishes head The Cunning Man menu, and a range just for kids offers mini versions of pub favourites. Signature Vintage pies offer fillings like beef & merlot with buttered peas, while The Cunning Man ‘Vintage classics’ menu includes lemon & garlic-roasted chicken with seasoned chips.

Paying homage to the Great British pub, the Vintage Inn bar stock includes cask-conditioned beers, real ales and a meticulously compiled wine list. Thirst-quenching offerings include seasonal non-alcoholic cocktails and freshly-pressed juices, and rich coffee is brewed freshly throughout the day.

Though in Burghfield, The Cunning Man is only 9 minutes’ drive from Reading West Train Station, or 12 minutes from the town centre.

The Cunning Man is a well decorated Country Pub, with exposed brickwork and a spacious yet still intimate dining area.
The food was perfectly cooked and delicious; a step above other local pubs in this area.
We were served by my friend Tim who was very helpful with explaining the menu and very well mannered table service. The staff have a great sense of humour and are always happy to help with anything.

Very friendly from the minute we walked through the door.

Overall the location and atmosphere were very good, the staff were friendly ,but service was slow.took more than an hour to get served
However, the food was a disappointing. Two of us ordered the special venison which was as few strips and over cooked meat. My partner enjoyed the Turkey, but the roast potatoes were not crisply and some of the veg was undercooked. Considering the price it was poor value

A varied choice if dishes were on offer. All that were tried were lovely. The Lamb Shank special was gorgeous. The service was excellent

In the daytime, being able to sit outside, cosy corner tables other times. On a Sunday roasts are great, which is why we went yesterday, disappointed as no roasts left. It was 7pm so next time will go earlier. Service a bit hit and miss, not bad but not great, slow and took a while for food to come out although not that busy. Also food could have done with being hotter.

We booked a table for 8 people 1 of which was in a wheelchair but only 7 could attend. The waiter was really helpful and removed the extra places without any fuss. All our meals were very well presented and we all cleared our plates. The waiter was really patient with my sister who is mentally handicap and takes a while to eat her food but he made sure that she had everything that we ask for to make it as easy as we could for her to enjoy her birthday, even putting a couple of candles on her dessert. We liked it so much we have booked for Christmas day.
