The Cow Restaurant and Bar is one of the Isle of Wight’s most unique places to eat, serving a selection of freshly cooked gastropub classics, and an extensive range of hot and cold drinks against the backdrop of a stylishly converted Swiss barn at Tapnell Farm. The vibrant rustic restaurant is surrounded by panoramic views of Tennyson Down, The Solent and The New Forest.

Served at lunch and dinner, The Cow menu offers diners a wide choice of both meat and vegetarian options, many of which are available gluten-free. Having specialised in beef and dairy dishes over their first 3 years, the restaurant launched a brand-new menu in 2018. The Cow’s talented team of chefs, led by Colby Meredith, now champion locally sourced produce, with fresh takes on home-cooked classics, like sausage and mash, macaroni cheese, and fish and chips. These new dishes, which are also available as “lighter bite” sized portions for smaller appetites, join the stellar line-up of burgers and steaks that the restaurant has already made its name for.

Tucked away in the rural heart of the island, The Cow is only a 15-minute drive from the Isle of Wight’s capital town of Newport.

    Loved this restaurant from the moment we got there to the moment we left. All the tables were nicely spaced out and all the ordering was done on the app. Meant that we didn’t even have to leave the table and everything was paid for when ordered. It was really easy to substitute items on the app too which is rare. I had the big smoke and my husband had the big chill and we both said it was the best burgers we’ve ever eaten. Even the chips were delish, really crispy fries. We didn’t have to wait long for the food which was a bonus and the views from the mezzanine whilst waiting were lovely on a sunny day. Can’t recommend this place enough, and the farm and water park for adults is an added bonus. Defo recommend and if we were staying for longer, would have returned!

    We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at the cow. We had timed our booking for the gorgeous views of the sunset from the large upstairs windows looking across to the sea and we weren't disappointed. The restaurant itself was relaxed, our table for 2 was well distanced from the next tables and felt very private. The staff were welcoming and friendly. I chose 1/2 lobster Thermidor in a smokey cheese and tomato sauce - it was delicious! My husband had the steak with dirty fries which he really enjoyed. Be prepared that it was served in disposable containers (I believe due to current infection control restrictions) but other than that it couldn't be faulted. Payment was made via an app which was fairly simple but lengthy, it was nice not to have to wait for a bill at the end, but could have been quicker with a PayPal option?

    Disappointing. We’ve been to the Cow on numerous occasions over the years so had no problems deciding to book dinner for 4. I appreciate COVID has had a huge impact on everything, including eating out but it was very different from all our other visits. We have been staying on the Isle of Wight for 4 weeks recently and have eaten out in many places so are able to compare experiences very well - and this was the worst meal out we had unfortunately. I appreciate staff and customer contact needs to be kept to a minimum where possible but there was almost zero customer service (apart from one occasion mid-meal where we were asked if everything was ok with the food). We were told the table was upstairs and that was it - everything else done by the App (which is a pain when placing multiple orders). I get this is ideal for daytime for families, particularly outside when busy but it was not right for evening dinning. Food and drink were dumped at the end of table. The food was very nice - very filling but really wasn’t expecting to eat out of cardboard boxes. Again this is more suited to high turnover daytime. The menu was limited (from last time) and I do appreciate the reasons why etc but no desserts apart from a tub of ice cream. At the end of the meal it just felt odd to just get up and leave. It definitely wasn’t the evening family dining experience that we had hoped for.

    Started well , deteriorated, and ended up being very poor. Burger and Steak ordered - the steak was overcooked and confirmed by staff so retuned to the kitchen. My meal was left with me so I ate alone. Second steak arrived - for £22 all I can say was there were 4 mouthfuls of steak and the rest was fat and gristle. Returned again and my partner ordered a chicken burger ! Apologies made by staff and the difference in cost applied. So we paid for everything, but ate separately therefore there was no dining experience. My view is that the chef should have at least come over - he stared sheepishly a number of times, it wasn’t busy - and remained in the kitchen. My partner went and spoke with him after the meal to offer his view. The chef smiled said it wasn’t his job to check on food that was up to waiting staff. We paid and went to say we were disappointed to waiting staff at the bar. They apologised again but considered giving our money back for the food we didn’t eat was a generous offer! They said they couldn’t interact during dinner because of Covid and social distancing. Clearly they were not able to speak at a 2m distance ??! When trying to explain eating separately wasn’t really what we expected we were told we were being rude and that that was how the evening ended ! Always nice to know customers are respected and their views considered !

    Fantastic burgers - best I’ve had - and dirty fries were great. Lots of thought into how to make the restaurant COVID safe. We’ll be back!

    Food was perfect and needs no change!. Overall a really good experience and great food. Free wifi was great.
