Lauded as ‘big and bold’ by Observer critic Jay Rayner, the food at The Cottage in the Wood Keswick is modern and creative, with largely British and French influences. Trained under the 2 Michelin-starred Germaine Schwab, head chef Chris Archer’s exciting menu draws on the rich supply of local ingredients.

The Cottage in the Wood menu includes Whitehaven turbot with Morteaux sausage, salsify, squash and cider, alongside chestnut gnocchi with butternut squash, broccoli, and cèpe velouté. The sumptuous tasting menu features Cumbrian roe deer with black pudding and celeriac, and game terrine with pear and gingerbread.

Nestled in England’s only mountain forest, The Cottage in the Wood in Whinlatter is a 17th-century inn where modern décor blends with rustic exposed brick walls and log fireplaces. From the chic dining room, guests can look out at the stunning landscapes of the Lake District below.

In the heart of the Whinlatter Forest Park, The Cottage in the Wood restaurant is a 10-minute drive from the popular town of Keswick.

A very enjoyable evening. Delicious and amazing meal accompanied with good wine selection. A warm welcome, pleasant and knowledgeable with excellent service. All set in a wonderful setting over looking Skiddaw and the lovely Cumbrian fells.

Tom and Faye, through their World-Class Service: Professionalism, diligence, and sincere attention alone; made this a memorable evening.

The food and matched wine took the whole experience to another level.

I have dined in the best London and Paris have to offer, but would not compare this experience to those.... rather, from now on, every such culinary experience will be compared to that which I experienced with my partner last night.

This was the equal if not better of any meal I have ever had!

From the beginning a good experience, the email correspondence from the restaurant asking re; dietary requirements, if it was special occasion, gave me confidence the from the outset our night would be good as checking up front a very nice touch, all hosts friendly, restaurant had lots of character, a welcoming real fire on arrival. We all had the taster menu (it would have been rude not to) a great opportunity to try creative and individual dishes. After much discussion during our meal we all liked a different dishes the best, I suppose that means we are all individuals, however, the chestnut risotto (my favourite) just beautiful the textures were amazing, lamb cooked to your own taste simply delicious, the bream was also chosen as a favourite, langoustine with the potato salad base was exquisite, the tiramisu got a fabulous reception by all. The wine pairing well thought out with all choices. Thank you for the Birthday welcome for my brother, we will definitely back but on a late spring or summer evening when we can see out of the lovely conservatory and look at the view over our beautiful county.

Slightly difficult to find for us as visitors to area; perhaps a discreet sign or two? Stunning aesthetics in location, situation and architecture. Warm welcome. Dining room has wonderful views. Table d'hote lunch - some charming if unoriginal touches before starter and satisfying flavours, particularly in starter and dessert. Attentive service, sometimes lacking in finesse.

The quality of the food was outstanding and each part of the menu was perfectly spread to pass a very pleasant 2 hours.

Front of house were equally perfect and the cosiness of the restaurant on a very rainy blustery night was very welcome.
